Urge Maryland County to stop deer hunt

BACKGROUND
The legislation that is referenced in article (https://our-compass.org/2012/03/23/urge-montgomery-county-maryland-to-stop-bowhunting-sample-letter/) did not pass Montgomery County Council. There now is a bill underway in Maryland General Assembly that does the same thing, but bypasses the need for the council to vote on it. There are much better ways to curb the deer population than this inherently dangerous bill.

SAMPLE LETTER
Dear Maryland General Assembly,
It has come to my attention that, in reference to Maryland General Assembly House Bill 671 (MC 2-13), for the purpose of establishing for archery hunters in Montgomery County a safety 4 zone of a certain size, the General Assembly is therefore reportedly considering allowing bowhunters to kill deer in an attempt to reduce deer populations. Although this hunt are would be inherently cruel based on the premise alone, it is important to recognize it is based on erroneous information.
Please allow me to illustrate a few of these concerns. First, ecologically, populations will fluctuate according to conditions and naturally-occurring food sources; it is the interference of humans that causes imbalance. To blame and slaughter the deer for human encroachment is both irresponsible and unjustified.
Second, killing deer artificially increases food supplies to the remaining deer, the consequence of which is increased reproduction and an ensuing greater deer population. In fact, studies have demonstrated that the continual cycle of seasonal hunting is responsible for a rebound, or larger herd populations, in subsequent years.
Third, this type of mass killing using such a brutal type of slaughter in such a central and visible location would certainly adversely affect both visitation and tourism; it would be financially detrimental to continue with such a cruel and unnecessary killing, and although I do not currently reside in Montgomery County, I would be unwilling to consider it, or nearby, as a potential vacation destination if this deer cull continues.
Fourth, bowhunters often spend hours following bloody tracks before finding wounded deer, if they look at all. Many deer are not found, and their deaths are slow and painful. It can take weeks for them to succumb to their injuries. Families are then torn apart, and young and weak animals starve or die of dehydration.
Please instead examine alternative, non-lethal options such as fencing, fertility control, and relocation according to established protocols, which, when using these methods appropriately, have all proven successful in curtailing deer populations. Please see these tips.

How can we get along when you devour my precious plants that have been around longer than you have? How can we get along when you help spread Lyme Disease with your ticks? How can we get along when you destroy the eco-systems? How can we get along when you pay our windshield a crude and often tragic visit?
Alternate deer control methods DO NOT WORK! They are very expensive and bow hunting is safer than a firearm and cost nothing. The meat is donated to needy families.
Why is Montgomery County different than Fairfax or other urban regions???
Get a life!! The deer are “OUT-OF-BOUNDS” !

We all know that hunting is very big business in the US and for that reason they will try to justify the killing of our beautiful wildlife as a natural thing to do, but getting off on wounding or killing innocent creatures is NOT natural and especially in the 21st century when food is plentiful and there’s absolutely no more need to even consider killing these animals for food…also if people want to go shooting, then Clay Pigeon Shooting still shows skill and is competitive and animal friendly at the same time…or are these hunters so sick in the head that they need to take the lives of our deer, elk and wolves etc,, no matter how cowardly their actions are to the rest of us (hardly fair game, a defenceless animal against an assortment of high powered rifles)..

Thanks so much for posting this Stacey and alerting me to it i abhor hunting and trapping of any animals but bowhunting just takes the cake! These animals are often times left to stagger about the forest with arrows plural stuck threwout its body its frightened disoriented in immence agonizing pain and are wondering for hours until the hunter finally finds him by the tracks of his blood and thats IF the hunter even follows most give up after a little while of tracking so these animals are left to pretty much suffer for days or even longer before they succumb to starvation dehydration and infection its the lowest of the low im so upset right now i sent all the emails and shared this info in several places i do help it makes a difference please keep us updated if you hear anything thanks again Stacey

I completely agree, thanks, Florence. Just thinking about it leaves me so cold and sad, it’s agonizing and barbaric. How anyone can do such harm is beyond me. There is such a disconnect.

I suppose you never heard of Lyme Disease or ever had tulips, hastas and vegatables in a garden. There is NO such thing as a deer repellent. MC 2-13 will pass and there will be plenty of MEAT to feed starving needy families.
I have recently tested positive for Lyme and have checked for ticks daily. The deer are the largest carriers and cases of Lyme have increased steadily with the deer population. There is a direct correlatation.
The deer will be no more soon!
