Ask University of Wisconsin to End Cruel Experiments on Cats!

BACKGROUND

For decades, the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) has allowed experimenters to conduct cruel taxpayer-funded “sound localization” experiments on cats like Double Trouble, a gentle orange tabby. In these experiments, cats have steel coils implanted in their eyes, holes drilled into their skulls, and electrodes implanted in their brains. Sometimes, they even have their ears cut off or are intentionally deafened by having a toxic chemical applied to their inner ear. They are then deprived of food for several days in order to coerce them to look in the direction of sounds during experimental sessions in which their heads are immobilized by a bolt screwed to their skulls.

More than 200,000 people have already contacted the federal government to ask that funding for these experiments be halted.

But UW also shares responsibility for approving and allowing this horrific abuse. Please use the form below to contact the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents. Urge the board members to use their authority to halt these cruel experiments immediately.

ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND

This morning (2/7), Academy Award nominee and longtime PETA activist James Cromwell was arrested after he burst into a UW Board of Regents meeting to demand that university leadership take action to stop cats like Double Trouble from having holes drilled into their skulls, being deafened with toxic chemicals, having steel coils implanted in their eyes, and being killed and decapitated.

Campus police arrested James and his fellow protester but not before the board sat stunned and listened as Cromwell shouted, “This is not science! This is cruel! Shame on you!” and held up graphic blown-up photos of Double Trouble, one of the many cats who has been tormented and killed in UW-Madison’s disturbing brain experiments that we first exposed last year.

SAMPLE LETTER | SOURCE PETA, CHANTAL BUSLOT

To Whom It Concerns,

It was with horror and revulsion that I read of the grisly experiments carried out at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on a continual basis, during which you subject innocent cats to the most excruciatingly painful ‘sound localization’ experiments. The cats have steel coils implanted in their eyes, holes drilled into their skulls, and electrodes implanted in their brains. Sometimes they have their ears cut off or are intentionally deafened by the application of a toxic chemical to their inner ear. They are then deprived of food for days untill hunger forces them to look in the direction of certain sounds, while their heads are immobilized by a bolt screwed to their skulls.

If this kind of torture was inflicted on cats by ordinary people they would be publicly shamed, prosecuted for animal cruelty, fined, and imprisoned. You are doing the very same thing under the guise of ‘science’ which in no way is any kind of justification.

You who promote and/or carry out these disgusting experiments deserve to be prosecuted, fined, and jailed for what you are doing, but you are allowed to hide behind your so-called scientific purposes. You should be ashamed. You are truly a disgrace to the human race, no matter what your qualifications are. You should be teaching kindness and compassion, not deliberately inflicting pain and torturing innocent creatures.

I am so very proud of James Cromwell for being brave enough to take a stand, and forcing you to confront what you are doing, allowing, and condoning.

I can only hope it has served to jolt you into a state of awareness, and that you will see the terrible error of your ways, and immediately put measures in place to ensure that these dreadful experiments are stopped forever.

Thank you for taking the time to read this urgent appeal.

I have seen and signed petitions on this issue. Have also posted to facebook numerous times, asking others to take action. Do you happen to know of any current/open petitions we can sign now? Thank you for investing the time to influence public awareness. Cruelty such as this is going on worldwide and there is MUCH work to be done by the individuals of the international community. ~Gerean Pflug for The Animal Spirits

Hi, Gerean. I am sorry that I know of no petitions. PETA did have an active petition for this issue, but they replaced it with the letter given that letters are more effective. If I come across any, or if someone sends me one, I’ll absolutely post it and let you know. Thank you for all you do.

Stacey, If I come across any related petitions.will do my best to let you know. Based on feedback, I have discovered that it is easier to influence the public to sign a petition, than to actually write a letter or place a phone call. I have been tracking many of the petitions I sign/ask others to sign and have seen them affect issues in a positive way.

Your posts are always on my radar. I encourage you to continue with consistent energy. I intend to.

I am going to email the U of W Board of Regents and the U of W President: board@uwsa.edu and kreilly@uwsa.edu, as well as the Chancellor at the Madison campus — chancellor@news.wisc.edu. I think pressure has to be exerted on the decisionmakers. If the email addresses in the article are the “scientists” themselves, it’s great to let them know that the public disapproves and views them as pariahs. However, you have to realize that they are psycho/sociopaths, feel fully justified in torturing animals in the holy name of medical advancement, and are not going to change their ways.

All experiments on ALL animals will be stopped NOW. To each and everyone of you that experiments on animals….your day WILL come and your END will be more PAINFULL than you can imagine! This is barbaric! If you need to experiment, then YOU lie on that table and see how it FEELS…Leave the helpless animals ALONE!!

You would think that empathy would prohibit anyone from doing these cruel and baseless experiments. Yet like eating meat, cultures worldwide have become immune to the suffering of animals. I agree with you that people need to leave animals alone, helpless and otherwise, thanks, Sharon.

I wish I was in Wisconsin so I could participate in countless riots to make people see even more about what has happened to double trouble and other cats. You mention the e-mail of the regents I assume. Please mention their names and phone number and home addresses. Have large groups of people picket their homes so they will know what their neighbors are doing. Have huge groups of people march down the streets where the building is where the terrible experiments are preformed. Many are graduate students and some of the signs should mention all the names of the graduate students that are inflicting such terrible inhumane torture and if possible mention where they plan or actually work. What would the companies do if day after day after day they were picketed. I would think that they would not care to hire the graduate student who participated in such horrendous
experiments or fire those who were already working with that company if all the right things were said on the posters. Always names, names and the company they plan to work for, etc. Mentioned the name of the CEO of the company they want to work for and see how fast they are rejected. Take examples from all the young people who use to fight in the name of injustice. All the marched and riots brings out the free press. Who could ask for more than the free press publishing who and where this torturing is taking place. You say there are laws against it. Well there were laws against it back then too but they did it anyway along with movie and T.V. Call all the press and newspapers, T.V, and make sure they are there when it takes place. Make sure there are a multitude of people there to yell out what is happening and of course pictures of Double Trouble. The names of all the trustees who have helped being responsible. Hopefully several of these people go to church and when you find out where bring a very large group of people to the church to point out who they are and what they have done. If you are criticized for this tell everyone who should be criticized for the torture they have allowed. Even if they are not there show pictures, name their names, and tell the people that the researchers have been allowed 30 more cats each month to experiments. Now this has to stop and stop now no matter what measures everyone have to take in Wisconsin, Washington. Picket the White House, its been done before with good results. No one wants to be embarrassed, so name the governor, and all the politicians who have allowed this to happen. Over and over again name their name including Obama who could stop all of this. Remember march,, need to have huge numbers of marchers, Call the press early , plenty of pictures of Double Trouble
tell them what is going to happen if we (the people) don’t stop it now. Have your own people filming the police trying to stop all of this. Have your people filming the culprits as they run out of the church, or try to stay in their homes with all the curtains shut. Film inside their windows just to upset them and then maybe they will help to stop the torture. Let them know that all of this will not stop until they help to get this stopped. Please, please help by joining the marches and don’t get disillusion. Don’t let them win. For the sake of the cats and other animals they plan to torture next, please don’t fail them.
