Photos of animal abuse and suffering posted on a Federal Wildlife Services specialist’s Facebook and other Web pages are stirring anger among wildlife advocates. In one series of images the pictures show two dogs savagely attacking a coyote in a leg-hold trap and the employee posing with the tattered carcass of a coyote. They also show other trapped animals – dead and alive. The Facebook photos began to circulate October 30, 2012 on the Web after being spotted by an environmentalist. Dear State Director Krischke:
Following up on the Animal Welfare Institute’s (AWI) letter, I, too, am writing to request your immediate investigation and subsequent termination of Jamie P. Olson, a Wildlife Services (WS) employee, based in Douglas, Wyoming, for blatant acts of animal cruelty.
As you are no doubt aware, you can view the following photos published by Mr. Olson:

As noted and sourced by AWI, they, and Project Coyote, firmly oppose the use of steel-jaw traps for the capture of any species given their inherent cruelty. I am further alarmed that instead of immediately killing the trapped animals, this WS employee inflicted even greater fear and pain on already-suffering animals caught in these brutal traps by allowing dogs to torment or attack the trapped animals as is depicted in several of the photographs. This is unacceptable behavior for any trapper, but such wanton cruelty and callous disregard for the welfare of these animals is particularly egregious when done by a government employee and must not be tolerated..
Furthermore, another photograph posted on Olson’s Twitter page titled “Eagles got to this adult female before i did. #3 bridger on a drag,” (also shown at this link – http://wg.convio.net/site/PageServer?pagename=priorities_wildlife_war_wildlife_kill_methods_trapping_abuse&autologin=true ) demonstrates Olson’s failure to check his traps in a timely manner and his disregard for the animal’s pain and suffering.
I also note that Mr. Olson appears to be the primary organizer of several coyote contest hunts in Montana and one scheduled for January 2013 in Dickson, North Dakota ( article dated October 15, 2012 about the MT contest and the attached flyer advertising the ND contest mentioned at below link).

Mr. Olson’s mobile phone number is included in the article. If this is a WS-issued phone, Mr. Olson’s use of it to organize and promote a coyote-killing contest is unacceptable and provides additional grounds for his termination.
As you know, WS is a highly controversial program responsible for killing millions of animals each year which is funded, in part, with taxpayer dollars. While AWI, PC, and WS disagree about the merits of WS’ lethal control practices, there should be no question that the intentional infliction of additional suffering on any trapped animal by a WS employee is entirely unacceptable and warrants immediate termination.

He told the Sacramento Bee they weren’t his photos, then admitted to the Montana paper they were him, he’s a liar too and I demand my tax dollars stop paying his salary!

There is an ethical hunter as there is an ethical farmer. Humans are omnivores and that is why we eat meat. Ethical hunters ensure they use all parts of the animal they kill, ethical farmers ensure their stock enjoy life prior to slaughter. I know you will not agree as you believe there should be no trade of meat, however, humans require protein and the best thing is to ensure their welfare up to that point.

My heart aches seeing such cruelty. The man is a typical stereotype for someone, who would as easily bash to death a defenceless human being, given the opportunity. He has absolutely no empathy. Cruelty does not discriminate. It either is in a person, or it isn’t. He isn’t sick, he is simply cruel. He had a choice to end that wolve’s suffering quickly and painlessly but he opted for cruelty. And made his dogs do the dirty work for him. Of course he wouldn’t have a clue about another option, to learn more about the wolves and how to live in harmony with them. Is is possible and tried out many times. We live in the 21st century, the age of advanced technology, yet as far as fitting into nature and living in harmony without the constant need to meddle, we’ve learned nothing!

I haven’t looked at these pictures, but I can tell from the comments that this man is utter scum! It’s sort of strange that nobody has decided to end his life, it seems that most want to. It sounds as though it might be good to hunt him when he’s hunting! You could get him to the point where he has no choice but to understand the pain he’s causing. I wonder if he would change or get worse? Is it the upbringing of these people that make them like this?
Have they accepted seeing cruelty so much, that they accept it as everyday life? If that is the case, then how could they be changed? No one wants psychopaths in the world. Hunting dogs are hunting dogs that’s what they do. If that Coyote had a chance to kill a domesticated dog it would. Hunting working breed dogs are not forced to do this type of work they thrive on it. However i do have issue with the Coyote trap.

Okay to all have you ever seen what a coyote will do to a cow that is in the middle of calving it will eat the ass out and kill the calf, then we have to go and put down the cow. That makes us lose money every time we have to go and put a cow down cause of a dam coyote. He was wrong in posting the pictures how he went about killing the coyote but they need to be controlled or the ranchers around will no longer be able to make a living. Wildlife Services are in place to make sure that Ranchers can make a living.

You do not own federal lands though you do get low cost grazing rights which should be eliminated. I have news for you; those lands are just as much mine as yours as well as every Americans. There are many ranchers that use non-lethal methods of control and are quite successful. I am quite sure that you would argue that they are “too expensive”. If you can’t afford to be in the 21st century in your chosen livelihood, then its time to get out. Please understand. This is one guy that got caught. “Wildlife Services” , aka “Wildlife Damage Control” was started in the early 1900’s for the Ranching Industry. It’s “agents” do this every day on our Public Lands (and also do it on private lands) to appease livestock operators, who have always viewed native wild animals, particularly wolves, coyotes mountain lions, bears, bobcats, etc., as ‘competition’ on the lands.
These agents trap, poison, use dogs, shoot, and often burn coyote pups & other animels out of their dens. Millions, upon millions of wildlife are destroyed each year for this purpose. This is done at taxpayer expense.
Many caring people believe that there will be No Peace or Justice for any wildlife until Public Lands Ranchers are removed from National Forests, Wilderness Lands, BLM lands.This slaughter also takes place on our so-called National Wildlife “Refuges” including annual hunting.
How can wildlife have a “refuge” if it is grazed, hunted and trapped? Why should Ranchers get government subsidies to graze at below-market rates on our Public Lands, at the expense of our native wild animals, which need this habitat to survive?

It largely exists for the Livestock/Ranching Industry, which grazes on our National Forests, Wilderness Lands, BLM and even Wildlife “Refuges.” Billions of mountain lions, bears, prairiedogs, bobcats, ungulates, coyotes, wolves and other native wild animals have fallen victim to traps, guns, den burning, & poisons on our public lands due to this terrible situation, over decades. Our public lands should be for the native wild animals, period. Please go to Care 2 and search “public lands ranching” to sign an important petition to save wild animals. Thanks!

I live in London and am horrified that this nightmare is even possible in a ‘civilised’ country like the US. Seen from Europe, America is decidedly a pit where kids shoot each other and where government employees exert their ‘rule’ over defenceless wild animals… I really don’t get what’s gone wrong in the history of this country, and why you guys don’t start a revolution is completely beyond me!!!.We would have nothing of the sort going on in Europe, nobody would get away with it!!!! Shame on anyone not fighting this cause with all their might!
