Please Urge LA Tech to Ditch Live-Animal Mascot Program After Second Tragedy

BACKGROUND

On July 29, Tech XX, Louisiana Tech’s English bulldog mascot cooked to death after negligent caretakers left the dog outside in scorching heat and then tried to cover up the incident. Please read more here. And this isn’t the first time a Louisiana Tech mascot suffered from a heat-related illness! Tech XX’s predecessor, Tech XIX, was retired after surviving heat exhaustion during a game in 2007. Alarmingly, the school has plans to get another English bulldog mascot!

Please urge Louisiana Tech’s administrators to join the many university and professional sports teams that have made the compassionate decision to discontinue live-animal mascot programs. And forward this alert widely!

SUBJECT

Please discontinue live-animal mascot programs

SAMPLE LETTER | COURTESY PETA

Dear President Reneau, Director Van De Velde, and Deputy Hungate:

On July 29, Tech XX, Louisiana Tech’s English bulldog mascot cooked to death after negligent caretakers left the dog outside in scorching heat and then tried to cover up the incident.

And this isn’t the first time a Louisiana Tech mascot suffered from a heat-related illness! Tech XX’s predecessor, Tech XIX, was retired after surviving heat exhaustion during a game in 2007. Alarmingly, it is my understanding that the school has plans to get another English bulldog mascot.

Please join the many university and professional sports teams that have made the compassionate decision to discontinue live-animal mascot programs.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
