UPDATE | JULY 20

In response to the outpouring of concern for the 21-pound lobster recently procured by the staff of our fish market, the Board of Directors of Good Seas Inc., d/b/a Capt’n Elmer’s Seafood Restaurant and Fish Market, have concluded that the lobster will be released back into the waters of Cape Cod. It would be contrary to the personal ethics of the individual Board members as well as the business principles of the company as a whole to allow the future of this noble lobster to be determined by chance.

The drawing, which began Monday, July 16, will proceed as planned. However, the prize offering has been revised to reflect the Board’s decision to release the lobster. The winner of the drawing will have the opportunity to choose to receive 21 pounds of retail size lobsters or to accompany the release team and participate in the lobster’s release.

All proceeds from the drawing will go to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA. Dana-Farber provides adult and pediatric care to those with cancer while researching and developing tomorrow’s cures. Tickets for the drawing are available for purchase now through noon on Sunday, July 22 at Capt’n Elmer’s Fish Market, 18 Old Colony Way, Orleans, Massachusetts. Participants will receive one drawing ticket for each $5 donation, or three tickets for each $10 donation. The drawing will take place on Sunday, July 22 at noon. The winner will be informed by phone Sunday evening. All are welcome to visit the lobster at Capt’n Elmer’s Fish Market.

We would like to thank our patrons, members of our local community, and the international supporters who have spoken out on behalf of this lobster. We greatly appreciate your continued interest in the protection and conservation of our local species.

BACKGROUND | MY FOX BOSTON

A Cape Cod restaurant and fish market is giving seafood lovers the chance to win a massive lobster while also donating to charity.

Capt’n Elmer’s on Old Colony Way in Orleans is raffling off a massive 21-pound lobster to benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. That adds up to nearly five pounds of lobster meat.

Those interested in entering can go to Capt’n Elmer’s and pick up the tickets in person or the fish market can mail the tickets. Those interested in having the tickets mailed can enter by calling 508-255-7221.

SAMPLE LETTER

It is my understanding that Capt’n Elmer’s fish market is raffling a 21-pound lobster as part of fundraising efforts; although this is a noble endeavor, it is causing the unnecessary suffering and future death of a sentient being, the lobster. I am therefore respectfully requesting that Capt’n Elmer’s makes the compassionate decision to discontinue the imprisonment of the lobster and relinquish him to his home in the ocean. However, as long as Capt’n Elmer’s continues to unnecessarily capitalize on the exploitation, imprisonment, and maltreatment of him, I will not financially support them. It is important to recognize that consumers are increasingly rejecting those businesses that are complicit in the suffering and unnecessary treatment of animals by shifting their loyalties to those businesses that do not participate in the exploitation of them, and I hope that Capt’n Elmer’s will extend such an ethical and empathetic gesture as well.

Thank you for taking the time to read this urgent appeal.

NOTE: I commented on the Capt’n Elmer’s Fish Market FB page and they IMMEDIATELY blocked me from posting PLUS deleted my comments!!!
This is the comment I posted less than an hour ago:
Am confused by your conflicting information Marcia ~ This post says The winner of this lobster will choose it’s fate. AND on the Fox Boston website under comments you have said several different things:
1)The winner will choose it’s fate! there is a boat arranged to take it out into the ocean and release it should the winner choose to do so. for those of you who would like to see that happen, buy tickets to benefit dana farber cancer institute (who endorse this lobster btw).
2)Then you say: new england aquarium said they’d take it so the winner may choose to do that! otherwise there is a boat arranged to take it out to be released. we are just trying to use the opportunity to raise money for dana farber.
3)AND AN HOUR AGO YOU FURTHER CONTRADICT YOURSELF: that is what we are going for. people do not understand obviously! we hope someone will release it but the goal is to raise as much money as we can for dana farber!!!
SO MAKE UP YOUR MINDS ~ ARE YOU RELEASING OR ALLOWING SOMEONE TO KILL AND EAT THIS ONE HUNDRED YEAR OLD LOBSTER????

I admittedly am somewhat confused as to what they are planning. I read this on Facebook, too, so hopefully only the best is the plan, but I caution that it probably won’t be just based on human nature in general. Thanks for your message.

    rcvd this email:
Thank you for your interest and concern for 21 pound lobster. There has been much talk surrounding the lobster. Allow me to clarify what I can:
-This lobster was caught in the area designated “OC”. This area allows for the harvest of lobsters measuring 3 3/8” in body length and larger. This is the only area in New England that has yet to enforce a max gauge meaning that there is no maximum size of allowable lobsters for harvest.
-There are numerous lobsters of this size caught each day in areas that require fishermen to throw back lobsters over their max gauge measurements.
-This is a male lobster. It certainly has its purpose in the reproduction process however, it does not bear eggs like its female counter part.
-Although there are thousands of lobsters of this size in our waters, unless you work on a boat, you rarely get to see lobsters this big.
-Because this lobster is so impressive and since most of us don’t get to see them this big, we wanted to do something really special with him. We decided to hold an opportunity drawing. Anyone can purchase tickets ($5.00 each or 3 for $10.00) for a chance to win this lobster. 100% of the proceeds will benefit Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to help in the fight against cancer. The winner is free to decide what they would like to do with this lobster however if the winner of the lobster would like to release it, we have arranged for a boat to take them out with a camera crew to set it free. New England Aquarium may also be able to make some space for him if the winner would like him to go there.
-The lobster is in a large tank that allows him to move about easily. There are a few other lobsters in with him as well. We feed him clams daily.
-The purpose of advertising this lobster and our opportunity drawing is to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Elmer, one of the founders of Capt’n Elmer’s passed away from cancer a few years ago. This is a disease that has touched so many of us. Dana-Farber is a very prestigious establishment that is more than worthy of a donation.
I hope this was able to answer some of your questions surrounding the lobster. If you are interested in taking part in out opportunity drawing feel free to come in to the fish market or call us at 508-255-7221 and we will gladly help you over the phone!
