BACKGROUND
Breed ban: please protest 72-hr.-kill proposal in Cumberland County Animal Control in Fayetteville, NC. Feel free to use the Sample Letter but please modify heavily as it is particularly long.
There is a breed ban on ADOPTION of said dogs, and it is set to be discussed on Monday the 5th of December for all Pit bulls, American Staffordshire Terriers, Rottweilers, Chow Chows, and Presa Canerios.
Cumberland County’s reason for this is they do not want to be held liable for these breeds and the possible problems with them after adoption from the shelter. A simple waiver should solve this.
We need to let them know that this is not the answer.
These dogs will be held for the mandatory 72 hrs and then will be killed, THEY WILL NOT BE GIVEN A CHANCE TO BE ADOPTED.
If the dog is an owner turn-in, he will be killed the second he walks into the back.
Again, this is set to be DISCUSSED on December 5 and will not go into effect unless passed by all committees.

SAMPLE LETTER | PLEASE MODIFY/SHORTEN
To Whom It Concerns,
I am writing today to express my grave concern regarding your breed ban proposal by enacting a 72-hour-kill plan in Cumberland County Animal Control in Fayetteville, NC, to affect all Dobermans, Rottweilers, Chow Chows, German Shepherds, Great Danes, Pitbulls, Mastiffs (all bully breeds), Akitas, and Huskies. This “vicious dog” or “BSL” ordinance illegalizes the ownership of the particular dog breeds named, the reason for which is to prevent any liability for injuries before or after a state in the shelter even though a simple waiver would prove sufficient regarding that concern.
Although the premise of this proposal is inherently biased and potentially unconstitutional, it is important to recognize it is based on what I would define as erroneous information, inaccurate witness accounts, and according to inequitable circumstances. To target particular canine breeds according to hysterical outbursts, impetuous reactions to news accounts, and false testimony is pure conjecture and serves no purpose other than creating conflict and dividing the community. This is neither productive nor beneficial. The inclination to protect the community from any potential canine attacks is both understandable and admirable; however, while our objective is equal our strategies differ.
Please allow me to elaborate. Dog attack accounts are ubiquitous, the media seemingly pandering to the universal desire for exaggerated and biased events. For example “pit bull” seems to be a loaded phrase, no longer merely representing a canine breed but rather responsible for evoking images of horrific, bloody fights, sadistic people, and a grossly prejudiced level of fear. To allow these dogs to be defined by a select few using propaganda and exaggerated and even false claims is unjust, unprincipled, and unethical. Please acknowledge that statistics can be manipulated to support any theory; when one theorizes using data to support such, one inevitably selects biased information. It is imperative that this situation not be approached from your theory that certain breeds are innately dangerous. Indeed, if I had the inclination, I am confident I could establish that miniature pinschers and labradors are the two most aggressive, menacing canine species using distorted accounts and manufactured or embellished “facts” to substantiate my position. Concentrating on the species rather than the problem of negligent owners, dog attacks, or dog bites in general is illogical and unfairly targets particular breeds, compliant dogs, and their responsible caretakers.
I am certain you are well aware of the arguments against breed-specific legislation (BSL): any breed can be potentially dangerous depending on the circumstances; any breed of dog can be trained to act in dangerous manners; any breed of dog can be provoked to fight in defensive situations; liability should be assigned to irresponsible people who fail to leash or train their dogs in appropriate manners; people who illegally support dog-fighting or other similar pursuits will commit crimes regardless of existing breed-specific legislation. BSL is therefore not an accurate or reliable deterrent, victimizing innocent dogs and their caretakers while neglecting to address those culpable: people who intentionally neglect their dogs or those who deliberately train them in aggressive behaviors. Enacting BSL only propagates breed-specific fear and irrational approaches to valid concerns. When communities become immune to legitimate problems by unreasonably focusing on targeted breeds and their owners, the problem only escalates, allowing deviant behaviours to flourish; when people start questioning the absence of enforcement and solution, you will determine that BSL is a fallible approach to controlling or preventing dog attacks.
Although the potential unconstitutionality of BSL is beyond the scope of my knowledge, please allow me this opportunity to share with you a few statements as taken from A community approach to dog bite prevention, American Veterinary Medical Association Task Force on Canine Aggression and Human-Canine Interactions. JAVMA, Vol 218, No. 11, June 1, 2001, and although these statements may not represent the most current data, JAVMA is decidedly unbiased with respect to BSL and can be considered an impartial source :
Animal control legislation has traditionally been considered a constitutionally legitimate exercise of local government power to protect public safety and welfare. Breed-specific ordinances, however, raise constitutional questions concerning dog owners’ fourteenth amendment rights of due process and equal protection. When a specific breed of dog is selected for control, 2 constitutional questions are raised: first, because all types of dogs may inflict injury to people and property, ordinances addressing only 1 breed of dog appear to be underinclusive and, therefore, violate owners’ equal protection rights; and second, because identification of a dog’s breed with the certainty necessary to impose sanctions on the dog’s owner is impossible, such ordinances have been considered unconstitutionally vague and, therefore, to violate due process.
Breed or type bans—Concerns about ‘dangerous’ dogs have caused many local governments to consider supplementing existing animal control laws with ordinances directed toward control of specific breeds or types of dogs. Members of the Task Force believe such ordinances are inappropriate and ineffective. Statistics on fatalities and injuries caused by dogs cannot be responsibly used to document the “dangerousness” of a particular breed, relative to other breeds, for several reasons. First, a dog’s tendency to bite depends on at least 5 interacting factors: heredity, early experience, later socialization and training, health (medical and behavioral), and victim behavior. Second, there is no reliable way to identify the number of dogs of a particular breed in the canine population at any given time (eg, 10 attacks by Doberman Pinschers relative to a total population of 10 dogs implies a different risk than 10 attacks by Labrador Retrievers relative to a population of 1,000 dogs).
Third, statistics may be skewed, because often they do not consider multiple incidents caused by a single animal. Fourth, breed is often identified by individuals who are not familiar with breed characteristics and who commonly identify dogs of mixed ancestry as if they were purebreds. Fifth, the popularity of breeds changes over time, making comparison of breed-specific bite rates unreliable. Breed-specific ordinances imply that there is an objective method of determining the breed of a particular dog, when in fact, there is not at this time. Owners of mixed-breed dogs or dogs that have not been registered with a national kennel club have no way of knowing whether their dog is one of the types identified and whether they are required to comply with a breed-specific ordinance. In addition, law enforcement personnel typically have no scientific means for determining a dog’s breed that can withstand the rigors of legal challenge, nor do they have a foolproof method for deciding whether owners are in compliance or in violation of laws. Such laws assume that all dogs of a certain breed are likely to bite, instead of acknowledging that most dogs are not a problem. These laws often fail to take normal dog behavior into account and may not assign appropriate responsibilities to owners.
It is my hope that prior to initiating any legislation or actions that unfairly targets trained, obedient, and docile canine breeds and their responsible caretakers, you will consider the implications of such acts as well as any potential unfavorable ramifications. Please remember that everyone, with the exception of the truly apathetic and unlawful segment who participate in dangerous canine training and irresponsible ownership, desires safety for their families and communities. This type of proposal requires input and discussion from all participants and interested groups with legal representation as well.

I wish you would check into this more. The breeds are being disployed without sure background on the number of people have been bitten or atackedfrom dogs. All dogs are in surrender of what there owners teach them. Yes certain breeds can learn easier but it is the human. So can you please take this in consideration and look at other states and look at thierestatus. I hope you understand that you want to kill without knowing the true research on these animals. I am sure you do not want to put this on your shoulders without knowing and recieve a bitter end from god from what you did. Can you do this with a clear consious! I am not being bad here, just want to make sure for you and the animals. Yes i rescue and abilitate and yes there is a bad animal out there no matter what breed, just like humans, but they have rights to. They cannot speak up but we can. I have a Sheppard husky mix and a Husky Lab mix, both are amazing animals. For all you people at this shelter who wanna kill these dogs….. I hope you all go blind and need a “seeing eye dog” one day, and i hope that there is none available for you so you can fall down the fuckin stairs. You’ve obviously never felt the love of a dog sleeping on your feet or greeting you at the front door. German Sheppards save lives and put bad guys in jail and you wanna kill them…….There will come a day when god will decide if you should live or die, do you want this on your resume???

One of the dogs that contributed to the recovery of Lacey Peterson and her unborn son was a Pit Bull. Their bodies were recovered in the San Franciso Bay. All of these breeds are used for professional jobs. Let alone the family pet. It is the people that damage these animals that need to be punished.

Very well stated Vince. I couldn’t agree more. I always had mastiffs and rotties growing up, they are not bad dogs at all. What the fuck is wrong with these fucking stupid retard “so called dog loving people”. My jack russell plays with a pit bull, he’s the best pit anyone could ask for. My uncle has had danes his whole entire life, never once had an issue with them. It’s not the breed of the dog that is the problem, It’s the fucking people that own them, that doesn’t want to take care of them anymore. it’s the fucking owners that makes these fun loving hard working animals be the way they are. If they just stopped and thought of how wonderful they were, they’d be amazed. Don’t kill innocent animals because the owners are fucking stupid and ignorrant.

they are not killing dogs! they have a very large pit bull population and a very low adoption rate, the ones that weren’t being adopted were going to breed specific shelters or being euthanized anyway. it is not possible for all towns/cities to support no-kill shelters, no matter how much WE want it. there is a problem with the system that needs to be fixed, this is not the way to fix it by blowing up and being angry at one shelter. please educate yourself before being pulled into senseless rage by an uninformed BLOGGER.

Take all of your money and create a shelter of your own. If you are so passionate you should be acting instead of blogging. No one wants to just kill innocent animals (well maybe Michael Vick) they are just trying to fix a problem in an economy that is strapped. I am sure this shelter has very limited space and not enough so called “animal lovers” to rescue the unwanted. People get all worked up over one situation when the real problem is systemic and for those passionate souls, if they were really passionate, this would never have arisen in the first place. Get off of your pedistol and do something other than write a letter to people who are working to solve problems.

I think you are right about people doing what I call vent and forget – can also be rant and forget. How many really understand the problem and do more than spout off? I’m sure the folks in those shelters don’t want to put animals down at all but if change is to take place they also have to demand sensible, better and more comprehensive laws regarding ownership and breeding of all species, especially non-native and venomous; in fact, we all should. I have owned a chow, akita, doberman, and lived next to pits and mastiffs. You people have no clue what you are doing! These animals could be therapy dogs, rescue, disability and even k9 dogs. What give you the right to say this are not adoptable and should be immediately killed vs. a ankle biting aggressive pomeranian?!!!! You are racially profiling an animal for goodness sake! Awesome letter Tyanna! Couldn’t have said it better myself. I’ve been a shepard owner, met many Pit Bulls, had a Mastiff that lived next door to me and many dobermans over the years. NONE were mean!! All were great family animals. This is most difinitely profiling. When I owned my Shepard, I saw it all the time with how ppl immediately acted around me whenever they saw him. Animals are not born mean….ppl make them mean and think it’s cool…it’s not at all!!! Now I own a 6 pd itty bit of a Yorkie that I rescued at 3 yrs old after being beat the hell out of most of it’s life by an alcoholic and guess what? He bites!! But wouldn’t you given his history? He can’t trust anyone. When I made a commitment to take him on, it was for life. But i’m a responsible pet owner and don’t let him around anyone he doesn’t know of any age and his leash isn’t one he can get off of. But he’s become a wonderful addition to our family….so what a waste it would have been to just put him down because of someone else’s actions. Would we do this to our children??

My question is if these breeds are so dangerous how and why are people getting these breed of dogs. I KNOW because it’s not the dogs, it the owners, the ones who shouldn’t own or be allowed around any animals, because they mistreat, abuse, cause their death. If they can breed profile, it won’t be long till they will step up their racial profiling to include anybody but them, and them can be whoever they have a dislike or hatred for. We have become a nation of haters,you don’t look right or that breed of dog has a reputation of being aggressive, because I saw or heard that the dogs from Michael Vicks home needed to be put down because of their aggressive behavior. Well it wasn’t breed into them, it was beaten into them and if they bothered to check to see what happened to the dogs they’d know most were rehabilitated. I agree, I have a pit/shepherd mix and she is the sweetest dog, the only thing she attacks is her food dish when I feed her. They need to not let this happen, otherwise it could spread.

Am I clear its the dogs and not the owners being put to sleep? Raise your bully breed respectfully and that will NEVER happen. Dont get a breed that you can not control or understand. Some people shouldnt be allowed to own these dogs, now the dogs suffer from stupidity of the owners, who do not even realize what kind of divotion or lover these dogs can give. Coming from a 45 year old female with a history of 12 pitbulls (AKA Bully Breeds) and never one ounce of aggression. Im discusted and cant even read or write another word.

I have had 4 German Shepherds in my 60 years and they were all angels !! The best dogs ever! My daughter had a Shepherd/Rottweiller mix that was so good with the kids ! The dog died of a stroke and now they have a Doberman/Shepherd mix. ANother good dog!

kinda makes you wounder. dogs are simular to humans we live the way we were raised so do dogs. so in that case should we humainly kill our children who are being bullys before they grow up and actually kill some one or rapes a child because there house hold didnt know how to raise them? it would probably save us money in the long run. if we are going to be judgmental about some thing why dont we do it where it actually counts. ive owned a german shepherd mix she was loyal and kind.

You have really taken this BSL to the extreme. What a BSL is, is a form of discrimination. It also violates the 4th and 14th amendment rights of these dog owners. So basically you as the government are violating the owners Constitutional rights. It is obvious that North Carolina does not believe in innocent until proven guilty. You as the government have made a law that makes these dogs and their owners automatically guilty. It sickens me to see what America’s state governments are doing with these Breed Specific Laws and your policy is one of the worst i have seen. I can tell you that as long as you have laws like this, I will never visit your state and i’m sure I speak for many others. Punish the deed not the breed.

Completely asinine. I own 2 German Shepherd, both purebreds. One is very protective and I make sure that she is contained if strangers are going to be around. Is it because she has a “history”? No. It is because I know her nature, and do not want to see someone injured, even accidentally, because she mistook an action on their part as threatening. The other is only a danger to cats. And I make sure that he is leashed every time we step out the door, just in case the one of the cats happens to be on or near the porch. My children have used these dogs as pillows, riding toys, etc. My 10 yo will even hold a piece of food between her teeth for the dogs to take, proving that these are about the least aggressive animals I have ever owned. We had a Border Collie/Corgie mix that was more of a threat than our Shepherds! That one actually did bite me badly enough to need stitches in my hand and kept me out of work for 6 weeks.

I just called the Cumberland County shelter in Fayetteville, NC.
I would encourage anyone reading this to also telephone the shelter and ask for the truth: 1-910-321-6852
The more people that call, the less likely they will actually implement this disturbing shelter policy.
The woman there said that this is not a policy that has been adopted.
She said that the idea of doing this, putting down all those breeds because of their breed, and not allowing them to be adopted or rescued, was actually brought up in a board meeting. According to her, the policy was not put into place. She said that someone found out about the “idea” that was brought up and ran with it.. posting it to the internet.
I am leary of believing what she said, so encourage all of you to telephone the shelter asap.
She said people from other states have been calling because they have heard about this.

I WAS ADVISED AT THE CUMBERLAND COUNTY POUND BY ONE OF THE WORKERS THERE. THEN IT WAS IN IN THE NEWSAPER THAT THEY WERE GOING TO HAVE A BOARD MEETING ABOUT THIS. I ADOPTED A PIT BULL FROM THERE 2 MONTHS AGO WHO I ADORE SHE GETS ALONG GREAT WITH MY OTHER PIT BULL AND NOW ARE BEST FRIENDS. I JUST DONT SEE HOW THESE PEOPLE CAN GET AWAY WITH SUCH ANIMAL CRUELTY. United States of A-holes? It really gets to me that they will try to judge a dog by its breed, yet they have no problem letting convicted rapists and criminals co-exist with residents in their town. The major difference is that these criminals have proven they can’t exist in society. What a messed up country we live in!

So true. I’d actually like to see criminals (mainly lifers, murderers, pedophiles, rapists) be euthanized immediately, and use prisons to incarcerate the dogs until they find homes. Inmates of lesser crimes would serve their sentence by caring for the dogs. Sure would be cheaper on the tax payers wallet.

Rattler jack– california has a pitbull and parole farm which is a tv series on animal planet… It’s a great idea. It teaches the dogs and inmates to care about others. It gives the inmates responsiblity, a job and new found compassion and the dogs get cared for and possibly adopted.

I can’t believe my eyes. How dare you decide the fate of these animals based on stereo type. I have a pittie and a shepherd and they are like big goofy babies. It is people who are the problems,, People who do not spend the proper amount of time training their dogs. People who spread hatred and fear about these breeds. To destroy an animal based on there breed is wrong. Judge me not for my looks but for the content of my character.. Any dog can be taught to be mean. I will have to say , toy poodles pack a nasty bite.. and to be honest I would rather be in a room full of doberman, shepherds and pitbulls than 1 4 pound little tiny poodle… The problem is there are no laws or strict guidelines for pet owners. To have them chipped, to have them spayed and neutered, Up to date on all their shots. Having a dog is a big responsibility and it is like having a child. If laws were put into place then we wouldnt be having these problems. But when you choose to destroy dogs because you neglected to put bills into effect and pass laws protecting animals. Because you chose to not hold people accountable for abusing animals. Because you allow people to walk away with oh dont do it again. If you put bills and laws out there , people will take having an animal more seriously knowing there is harsh fines and jail time involved for not properly taking care of their animals. It helps the government, it helps the states, it helps the shelters, it helps pet owners. So maybe you need to redirect your attention on passing laws instead of destroying these animals.

Shame on you, What is next small children who bite? Please if possible send them out of State where some one with a heart may provide loving homes. Mary, pointing fingers and generalizations are not ways to change laws in the South or the North. As a NYer who has lived in SC for 15 yrs, I was horrified to learn that PA still allows gas chambers to euthanize companion animals. Leaving animal control to county and city government will always lead to the most cost-effective solution.Sadly, this is killing animals bred to be by our side.

I have been the proud owner of 4 German Shepards, 1 Great Dane, 1 Husky, never have any of them bit anyone. They were the most loving animals I have ever seen. My daughter was biten 3 times by a pekingese and a pomeranian. Small dogs will bite faster than a large dog. They too leave scars.
Someone just doesn’t want to do thier jobs and care for these animals the way they should be. They should lose government funding if they don’t want to take care of these dogs.

I am an owner of a Great Dane. He is very gentle and loving, as well as loyal. I will say that given a circumstance he is unfamiliar with, he can be agressive. The circumstance be that someone will come to the door or on our property, and he will bark very loud. He is only protecting his turf. But once he realizes that the person is welcome in our home, he is the first to show affection and want the attention of this person. He is however, not kid-friendly, but that is MY fault – NOT my dog. I did not socialize him as a puppy. But I take every precaution and shield children from my dog. A dog will only act and react to the situation based on how its been trained. Not all bad behavior is the dog’s fault. In a lot of situations where my dog has been destructive to my belongings or areas in my home, it has been MY fault. There are so many breeds that have a “bad” rap, but you have to consider the upbringing of the dog. I can go on and on, but you get my gist…

I can NOT believe how far these officials are going with this! Its bad enough that states are allowing BSL for Pit Bulls but this is taking it too FAR! You “people” need to realize that the REAL problem lies with the owners and not the animals. If you would work harder on harsher penalties for humans who do not follow through with proper pet ownership instead of punishing animals that people are responsible for, there would be alot less problems! Why not take animal abuse to the next level and make it a felony with harsh treatment of animals, too? GET REAL AND USE YOUR BRAIN LIKE GOD INTENDED YOU TO! Your absolutely right. People are the problems here. If you cannot spend at least 3 to 4 hours of quality time with your dog then do not have one. Dogs are very easy to train. I have never had a dog bite anyone who enters my yard , they do not chase anything. But they are very protective of each other. I have 2 rescues that were used as bait dogs and my other dogs love them to pieces. I have cats and they all play and wash each other. It is sad that it boils down to this as a result of lazy people, uneducated people, selfish people, heartless people who just see them as an object rather than a living breathing life that needs to be taught and nurtured just like a child. If you ignore children , what will they do, they rob , get into drugs, and all other kinds of mischief. Same applies to dogs, if a person does not teach their dogs boundaries and rules , then the dog pays for the persons mistakes. I have seen the law against these large breeds and allot of these specific dogs end up being dumped in shelters where they will never see green grass or feel a loving touch again. They are put to death.. Fayetteville loves to kill dogs, they were in the news for hiring people to go out in the streets and shoot stray dogs.. and made excuses that they were trying to protect the citizens from getting diseases. They will lie and do what ever it takes to banish dogs period. I moved to the Carolinas 7 years ago and I have never seen 2 states full of animal abusing murdering ignorant hateful people as I have seen here.. I rescue because these states take matters into their own hands, they gas, and think its okay. They allow animal abuse to go with a slap on the wrist. That is why this country is going to crap. Because people were meant for so much more, but were given the will to think, but they are destined to destroy. I have written more letters than I can count, I have stood on town hall steps in the pouring rain, and these people will not listen because they find that they are the ones in office and they pretty much get what they want without listening to the outrage.

My pitt was the sweetest girl anyone could ever have.She was treated with love and respect.
She never bit any body even my grandson when he was a baby and he pulled her tail. She would just lick him.Its all in how the dog is raised not all are bad. If this is the case maybe we should declare that all of dog catchers are bad and have them put to sleep. Punish the people who train their dogs to be bad not the dog he is only doing what is trained to do. lets use some common sense here. Or are you the kind of people who don’t have any of that.

My best friend is my 5 year old DEAF pitbull. She is amazing, we trained her to respond to hand signals. She’s been growing up with my son and my cats, she has no idea what it is to be mean. She does know how to show unconditional love is because she’s been raised with it. She stays with me when I have seizures, never leaves my side. She’s so loving and gentle .She is and always will be a huge part of my life. Dogs of any breed can be bad. But it’s been my experience that bad dogs are bad because of bad people. People who aren’t responsible or smart enough to train their dogs will have bad dogs. People who show their dogs love, kindness ,and respect will have the friend of a lifetime. WAKE UP PEOPLE ! ! ! IT”S TIME WE ALL DO WHAT WE CAN TO STOP BREED DISCRIMINATION NOW ! ! ! Because tomorrow could be to late.

Donna, I agree wholeheartedly. I have a Lab mix. He has been petted, love on, and shown unconditional love all of his 4 years. He is gentle, obedient and, like you, he warns me (by whining) when it is time for my medicine. He lays right beside me if I get sick. He never snaps or growls, even when he is undergoing things he hates, like nail clipping, baths, or ear cleaning. He will rebel, but he is never rough, When people come over, he naturally just climbs up in their laps, too! Of course, I have to stop that when it happens. Anyway, it is true, dogs will behave they way they are trained to behave. My dog still remembers the hand commands and verbal commands from when he was under 10 lbs! (He is now 60+ lbs.) He is protective, with a menacing bark, but he wouldn’t hurt a bug. My childhood with a Doberman, 2 Chow Chows, and many mixed strays showed me that any dog can be a good dog with the right attention and time given to raising it. Screening owners-to-be is a great idea. How about some free training classes, too? Surely there is a vet or trainer who would volunteer. All the best, Kris Malloy

I am 55 years old and have always had dogs and cats live together, i have raised my children with them, they have protected us and gave us unconditional love.

This is NOT correct information – Not all these breeds are being looked at. This meeting took place and didnt go well, it failed and more meetings are being held. Someone I know spoke with the Mayors Office yesterday and all these breeds are not included. Look at the Article

I will be attending along with my bully..so a person that is one ethnic kills someome should they all receive the death penalty. I just dont see how this can be legal. The same shelter is where I adopted my pit bull. They did not question my living situation or anything but now they want to take precautions. It just all doesnt make any sense. But i will be there! Yes the dobes is protective of her property but she has never attacked anyone in her life this just her way and breed. people think they are so superior. the problem here is stupid people like the ones who decided to have this killing spree get a hold of these animals (and any animal) and raise them completely wrong, uneducated, and ignorant. while they’re sitting on facebook as their dog slowly turns into this “bully breed” they could be researching how to properly raise their animal. even simple things like watching those dog whisperer shows can help, but nobody wants to put in the effort. they just want to get a dog because they figure they’re americans and americans get dogs! thats just what we do! well americans also protest for what they believe in. after we get them to realize what an idiotic and inhumane idea this killing spree is, lets get the states to realize that all owners of animals should have to be registered, licensed, and pass a test. we have to pass a test to drive a car but not care for a life? if we did do this, most of these dogs wouldn’t end up in shelters anyway so we couldn’t have to worry about it anymore.

It just stuns me that governments are so lazy and won’t do the research on these animals. Most police forces in this country have German Shepard, Dobermans, that work along side them AND live in their homes with their children, Pit Bulls were also considered to be “Nannies” in the earlier part of this century because they were do docile….it is how they are trained and treated by humans that make them dangerous, start locking up those people, not the animals. Do your due diligence Fayetteville County Government and do not take the easy way out on this one. Your failure to educate yourselves and the public in which you serve shows your inadequacies as a governmental body and in turn will kill innocent creatures needlessly.

Please give them a chance. It’s not their fault, it’s the previse owner’s fault. We had a Great Dane before & she was very gentle. I have friends that has pit bulls, bullmatifts, & other kinds of dogs that are gentle.

i’ll probably get a lot of hate for this….but just bear with me…
I can semi-understand their logic behind euthanizing these breeds. Most of these breeds are large, intimidating, and extremely hard to find homes for. Big dogs require more space, more food, vet bills etc etc. it honestly has nothing to do with whether they’re aggressive or not.
With the overcrowding of shelters-they’re really left with little options. Everyone cries and shakes their fists that they don’t want to see these dogs put to sleep…but what are you all doing? are you donating hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to these shelters to make sure that they can properly take care of the thousands of dogs that are dropped off on their steps? even some “no kill” shelters kill….so that’s not always a fall back either. Interstate transport to another shelter…….who’s going to pay for that? how much money do you think these State run shelters get? and the little non-profit rescue centers????
i’m completely against BSL–and yes, whole heartedly agree that you should punish the deed not the breed. but it’s all a matter of simple economics when it comes to stuff like this.
I also currently have 2 rescued “pit bulls” , a german shepherd, a dogue de bordeaux, and two Irish Wolfhound puppies. I KNOW how much food costs, emergency vet trips, travel expenses etc.
I’m not advocating the ‘murder’ of innocent dogs– but this is what we get because people won’t spay and neuter their pets.
If any of you really cared you’d be spending more time trying to find a way to actually help than spending time hurling insults and ignorant comments at a virtual audience.
*and to the people who say to close down the shelter–what good would closing it down do??? Honestly, think about that for a second.
1) PEOPLE (who probably have to take a low paying job to feed their mini-humans) would be out of a job in this already crappy economy

why aren’t labs on the list? I personally have been bitten by 2 different black labs (15 stitches in my forearm) I don’t want all labs euthanized either! Any dog can bite. If too big was their reasoning why not say any dog over 50lbs?

I have a 75 lb. Boxer, and he would take up no more room in a kennel than a toy poodle. A large dog certainly eats more food, but that is about it as far as “sheltering” costs are concerned. I disagree completely with you saying that this crazy proposed policy has nothing to do with whether or not the dog is aggressive, that is exactly what the reason is, it is NOT financial in nature. Without really researching these breeds, they have decided that all these large dogs are aggressive, and that shows what small minded people they are.

If shelters would lower the price on “adoption fees” i’m sure more people would adopt ! I have owen 4 lab/husky/shep.mixed and they were all good dogs.

I own an English Mastiff and he’s the biggest pussy cat I have ever seen. My sister owns a pit bull…he’s a sweet heart. A little rambunctious, but he’s still a pup (less than 3yrs old). My other sister has a German shepherd. She’s beautiful and wouldn’t hurt a fly. I can’t understand why people want to destroy these beautiful animals. I can’t imagine any of the three dogs I mentioned hurting anyone….instead of punishing the animals surrendered, why don’t you go after the owners? Nine times out of ten, they are the reason for the bad behavior in these pets. Call Caesar Milan if you need to…the man is a genius….He will tell you that the animal is not at fault and he can show you how to retrain not only the animal but the idiot owners.

I am so shocked at this!!! I have worked with animals all of my life!!! ALL of my adult life! These breeds are adoptable and very much in demand. They are GREAT family pets! I am SO incredibly amazed at the ignorance of some people. DO RESEARCH !! In my experience with animals its the small breeds I ALWAYS had to send my employees to the Dr for bites! In my 17 years of working with animals not a ONE was from ANY of these Breeds! I am just so shocked that this is NC answer!

I am so tired of politicians deciding what is best for the majority when they dont even ask the majority how they feel about an issue or situation. The dogs and the breeds are not the problem it is how the animal is raised and treated. I have a friend who owns a rescue (rockyridgerefuge.com) and she rescued these 3 “aggressive, mean and threatening” shepards from a bust. These dogs were under nourished, beaten, and mostly just scared. Within a few weeks these dogs were playing with the deer, ducks and other animals on her farm and have since been adopted out. All that was needed was proper nutrition and LOVE. Dont just kill an animal because of its breed. That is just cruel and unjust!!!

I own a 200 lb english mastiff. He is a gentle giant. Mastiffs are not aggressive dogs unless they feel their owner is in danger. He is sweet, loving and a big lap dog. This is so assine. There is no such thing as a bad dog just bad owners and breeders He was attacked by a lab and he did not retaliate. He ran and hid behind me!. I will stay in PA where my mastiff is loved by all.

It’s ironic that we are shunning the breeds that have been entrusted for years to save the lives of millions of soldiers and policemen. Shepherds, “Pit Bulls”, Rottweilers and Dobermans have been helping our military and police force for years. These loyal dogs sniff out bombs, and take down criminals on command for their masters. Now that some people have a fear of these “aggressive dogs”, they should all be murdered. Yes, murdered. People really need to realize that as different species we are all supposed to co-exist on this earth. I for one, love my German Shepherd and know that he will protect me if it comes down to that. Yet, he has never shown any aggression towards another dog or human since I’ve had him. Apparently his prescence is enough. In fact, he does exactly what he is supposed to do; he ignores those who are not in my family and show no threat to any of us. This BSL is the coward’s way out . . . let’s just kill any dog that comes through the door that fits a certain stereotype. I believe many people in history have done the exact same thing; it’s called discrimination and racism.

this is ridiculous. I’ve owned chows, danes (sweetest tempered dogs I’ve ever been around and very good with children), german shepards, and would love to have a mastiff. The only dog I’ve EVER been bitten by…a peekaneese/pomeranian mix – and she was the most foul tempered dog I’ve ever met – but of course, I don’t hold that against all peeks or poms. And for the record, most “pit bull attacks” are NOT actually perpatrated by pit bulls…most people can’t even properly identify a pit bull and will identify basically any short haired, muscular dog of a similar height as a pit bull. I read about a survey given to several hundred Americans, the results showed that boxers, jack russell terriers, blonde labradors, and american bulldogs are COMMONLY mistaken for pit bulls. But again, let’s not let the truth get in the way of “facts”.

There isn’t enough room in shelters. Big dogs eat more than smaller dogs and take up more space. This is a logical solution to the overcrowding and feeding problems. There are TOO MANY dogs in shelters and not enough adopting them. I do not want to pay more in taxes so they can double the number of dogs they are holding.

Andrew I just stumbled on this thread and was a little saddened by your cold response. You feel so strongly about paying taxes to support shelters, but remember that communities allow people to breed these animals. If this cost is so offensive to you, why not tell your city officials that you want them to make the owners of unspayed / unneutered pets pay more taxes. Make the cost so high that it will be too expensive to breed. People have caused this problem and people should pay, NOT the animals. Andrew, believe me when I say this…shelters do not want to double the numbers of animals they are holding. Shelters want them to stop showing up on the doorstep.

How about trying Owner Specific Legislation. Require owners to take their dogs to training classes. Require Owners to submit to home inspections, Require Owners to be responsible. A dog is what the owner makes it, More poodles bite people every year that all those breeds combined. What you propose violates the constitutional rights of the people. It is ‘Profiling” of the worse sort, because it ends in death. You are intellegent people, you are capable of thinking this through and finding a ‘Humane’ solution.I respectfully ask you to reconsider and come to a more viable solution. BSL has been around for years, it has not solved anything, in fact it has only muddied the waters and exacerbated the problem. Hold owners responsible for their dogs actions. Decide on whether to put a “so called dangerous” dog down by a review board, not an “across the board” law that destroys all the dogs of that breed. Many times a dog in a yard is teased by outsiders walking by and that dog becomes fearful just by the taunting. FEAR is a big motivator in a dog that “shows bad behavior” In my neighborhood there are two dogs who are chained in their owner’s yards. They bark and pull on their chains as we walk our small dogs in the street. I learned the barking dogs “NAMES” and now call them by their names and instead of barking and pulling on their chains, they stand still, wag their tails and have a peaceful demeanor about them. Many dogs are “threatening” to strangers but they become friendly after showing personalization and friendship to them. It’s up to owners to socialize their dogs if they want them to meet and greet other people and other dogs. It’s also up to owners to have their dogs in a fenced in yard and not to let them run loose.
What you are proposing is breed cruelty. For every bad dog out there in those breeds, there are multiple many more who are good dogs. If you are going to single out “bully breeds”, you missed Australian cattle dogs and boxers! I know of an owner who lets her Boxer run loose and he has jumped on elderly neighbors and a pregnant young woman who was walking down the road. It’s how they are raised, not the breed and you are so wrong to lump them all in a breed KILL law! Instead of killing the dog, make a law that makes the owners more responsible for their animals!!! Make them pay medical bills and damage costs!
BTW, I have a relative who raises Dobermans and she has never had ONE that was a bad dog. She trains her puppies from birth to be gentle to everyone around them. This is her business and her passion to raise good dogs.

Why not just kill all animals.There is a dog attack on file of a yorkie killing a baby, and dogs and cats have been known to spread disease. Choose one animal to kill, and one might as well kill all. Save money and close the shelters and put the money in other programs. I don’t understand why shelters take in more animals than they can support. Each shelter should work with people who own animals already to try to get them to keep their animals. If one really cares, one should not give up their family member. A pet is a lifetime commitment. If one can’t guarantee 20 years to devote to an animal, they shouldn’t own one at all. I hope they don’t do this

Profiling animals is just as bad as profiling people. These breeds are not bad. I have had many Shepherds and Dobermans that are as sweet and docile as baby Pomeranians. They wouldn’t have hurt a fly. It is all in how they are raised and even if they are raised in an abusive manner or taught aggressive behaviors they are smart, sentient creatures and those behaviors can be unlearned. How about we euthanize all humans who are bred from people who have been arrested for aggressive behaviors or raised in households where abuse and aggressiveness is prevalent? It makes just as much sense as what you people are proposing. This is a senseless crime against God and nature. What makes people think they have they right to do this? I don’t understand how any person who considers themselves an intelligent, caring human being could even consider this! This type of madness has to stop!!

Wow…doggy racism? That’s like saying all Asians are bad drivers or all people of Middle-Eastern descent are terrorists. Not all dogs of a certain breed are bad. Dogs have a unique emotional and psychological personalities just like people. If the dogs are not properly raised, trained and conditioned they will have character defects or emotional issues just like people will. It’s not the dogs, it’s the people who neglect and abuse them, or at the very least, don’t take the time to train them properly. So if “Breeds” of dogs can be destroyed because of the crimes and misdeeds of some of the individuals of that breed, then what is to stop this from being applied to people some day in the future? Everyone who is a member of a certain family or ethnicity should be given the death penalty for committing a crime or misdeed? That’s called genocide. Dogs may not be human but the humans responsible for them should be.

My great chow Mr. Bear was one of the most magnificent spirits ever to walk this planet. He passed away in my arms about two years ago. In his final moments he kissed me goodbye twice with his big blue tongue, as I lay with my face pressed next to his. He was so incredibly powerful, yet so incredibly gentle. ALL love. Its a clear fact that some or most of all breeds bad habits come from bad owners. Last time I checked they werent putting to sleep all of the people who release these animals into the streets of our city. In fact I rescued a bully breed rottweiler right off the street! He’s been my best friend forever and has become a family member and not (a Bully breed)

Are any of the responsible people for this type of ridiculous legislation, which has been proven not to work, reading these comments? I think that when you get the real threats off the streets; namely the rapists, murderers, robbers and child molesters, I will keep my pit bulls, who are not a threat or danger to anyone or any animal–but with the prevailing mindset–someone (maybe the one trying to break into my home) will be afraid to do so–BECAUSE I have them!!! Spend tax dollars more wisely. Remove irresponsible pet owners/breeders. Remove HUMAN threats to my home and well-being. Enforce the laws that are already in place. Educate yourselves about the animals. Get some REAL professional opinions and REAL statistics. Check out the latest behavioral studies. Actually TALK to a VET or Shelter worker. Hoping this is not true. Dogs learn their actions from how they are raised. There will always be a circumstance that even a well trained dog will react in a negative way, but it is per circumstance. The entire breed should not be punished. I own a Shepherd, and his closest buddies are danes, dobermans, bull breeds and an akita. They all get along great and I feel 100% safe with them all. Please do not punish the dogs. Send them out of state to a rescue / rehabilitation group who can find them appropriate homes.

Dogs of the breeds here mentioned are some of the most noble, loving and trustworthy animals I have ever met in my life. Ok first of all. it doesn’t matter what type of breed the dog is on how they will behave or whatever it all lies on the owner’s shoulders you can train a Shelttie (sp) to be mean. I have a German Shepard and he is very loving he’s great with my 2 young kids. I have also had numerous Husky’s growing up and in my adult life they have all been great dogs and were not mean to anyone! Every dog I have ever had has always been a sweet dog and very loving. Like I said it depends on the owners NOT the breed of the dog! You can train any animal dog, cat, bird or whatever to attack. Please think about that before you go banning certain breeds b/c you think they are dangerous.

I’ve had (have 3 at the moment) several rescued huskies (Siberians and mixes) over the last 15 years. All were adults, all were origins unknown, training unknown, early experiences (fair or foul) unknown. All turned into awesome dogs with a bit of training. ‘Nuff said.
I’ve also met a number of awesome bully types, including the one who comes to a farm I work at (where there are a number of loose animals ranging from fowl to pigs to sheepand goats)… she ignores them all. My cousin has two rescued pitbulls, and two preschoolers; these prove the breeds original job as babysitter/companion.
And finally, the excellent video by Boston Snowdogs, of people and their dogs enjoying an afternoon of “urban mushing” on bikes and scooters. The team of pitbulls does a beautiful “on-by” (not batting an eye) past an enthusiastic doberman on the loose!

Who decides which breed is deemed bad? That is what I would like to know. How can you do this is very sad and is genicide. Please take this seriously as dogs are humans best friends and bring comfort and delight to so many people that might not get that. I know for me my dog is a lifesaver. This is unconstitutional. No matter what way you look at it, this is a free country and you can’t tell people they have to do stuff like that. What you guys need to do is call your Congressman. I have 2 pitbulls, adopted, my famele was abused, but she never showed aggression towrds people, she is most loving dog I ever had! With the righ person the dogs are great! I can only speak for Great Danes here, as the only pure-bred dog I’ve had was a Great Dane. I grew up with her. She was a pup when I was a little girl, and she was a house dog (we had a big house, and she did go outside to run around and go to the bathroom). She learned early on not to jump on people. She was great around kids – a little nervous when they got loud, but we never had to separate her from children or visitors. At her most dangerous, she might knock a bulb off the Christmas tree with her tail. Once or twice she broke her chain outside (fairly small, because we had no need for a thicker one) to chase off a couple of strangers that were throwing rocks at her, but once she reached the property line and they stopped throwing rocks, she turned around and came back. She never bit anyone, never hurt anyone, and we never feared that she would. She never hurt any other animals, either. My family members were never professional dog handlers or trainers. We taught her a couple of tricks (like shaking our hand with her paw), we taught her the typical commands (sit, stay, etc.), but mostly we were just a loving family, and she was never a bully.

You guys are sick people. Get a damn waiver for people to fill out, just like the rest of the shelters do. People won’t want to take an animal to your “shelter” again, they don’t take them there to be brutally massacred, but to find a new home, unless they truly are as sick as you. WRONG. Oh and very very very stereotypical on your part for categorizing these living creatures. Dogs are the one animal in the animal kingdom that shows unconditional love for there caretaker, unless they’ve been abused and that’s when they get scared. So if anything, help them. It is your job after all… Right?

This is UNTRUE. Nothing goes into effect on Monday. Monday evening there will be an Animal Control Board meeting to propose an adoption ban on rottweilers, AmStaffs, Pits, Chows and Presa Canarios, as well as any mix of those breeds. This meeting is open to the public and a group of us will be there to peacefully protest this proposal. Please attend if you can, and PLEASE stop spreading untrue information.

I agree – the TRUE article states: The idea is only in the discussion stages but has already created an uproar among animal advocates, according to Dr. John Lauby, Animal Control director.
The board is suggesting that county residents be banned from adopting Rottweilers, American Staffordshire terriers, pit bulls, chow-chows, Presa Canarios or any mix of those breeds, Lauby said.

This new “law” is completely ludicrous & is so far from the true nature of any canine breed. Pits, which I have owned, are just as loving as another canine breed. If this is the case for these breeds, then you must look at all breeds, even the mini breeds, such as Chi’s. Little canines tend to be aggressive also but they are not being put down. Poodles also have a tendency to bite. You are basing your law upon no reliable evidence that all of these dogs WILL attack….NOT TRUE. The human factor is what makes any canine bite, it’s not necessarily in their genes. Humans, such as Michael Vick, make pits mean for their own sick entertainment. This “law” is totally off the charts a bad choice. It’s wrong to say that all of these breeds are aggressive when in reality they are not all that way. I couldn’t live with myself if I made this decision & I sure hope that you will consider the ramifications of this “law”. There is no rhyme or reason that this law should be put in effect. I hope this gets plenty of news so as to show that this law is not the correct way to “save” someone from being bitten. All dogs & cats also bite but most often they are harassed and will strike out. Please consider that this will only bring about the unnecessary killing of innocent, sweet animals everywhere.

This is a very important policy to fight as hard as we can. It was that way in Guilford County, NC. Over the past couple of years, we have worked with them and now things are better than they were. They do work with rescues and allowing them to take those breeds. The sample letter is WAY WAY too long and sounds like a lecture. Please, make your letter short and to the point. The well intentioned letter above will be tossed before they read the first paragraph. Please everyone, do send a letter and tell your friends. This is a terrible policy and must be made very public. In fact, please send a letter to your local newspaper editor too.

This has proven again and again to be pointless, because the real issue is being ignored. If you ban certain breeds of dogs, then you will see rises in bite statistics in other breeds. If you’re worried about powerful breeds ending up with bad owners, then screen the owners. And if you cannot or are unwilling to do that, then let them go to rescue groups. And if you cannot even do that? Then at best you’re lazy and truly don’t care about the welfare of these animals, and should remove yourself from the business of caring for them. And you’re only giving 3 days for the owners to claim them? That’s like an automatic death sentence already!

I’m sorry I think this is wrong. I believe that animals get to be bullies because we people teach them to be that way, but not all of them are & they need a chance to live. Honestly I would rather get rid of the people many times. Lets try that for a while maybe our country wouldn’t be in the state it’s in. Sorry just think it’s very unfair for those poor creatures. We have a Husky that was a stray that came to us, we found the owners through the vets & animal shelter and Thankfully for us the owners decided not to keep her. She is the sweetest thing ever. Yes she does like to take off if not careful, but with anything, child, pet, elderly you Must put effort into their care. Teach the people how to care for them, make obedience training much much cheaper so they can learn the proper way of training them. Teach them if you give mean you get mean. Don’t teach them that it is ok to destroy them instead of loving them. Would you really destroy your child or parent how about your grandparents. No still not quite the same but people still need to be taught how to care & be responsible not just give up on them. Just like marriage if we don’t love each other or we can’t stand each other it’s ok to get divorced. Wrong wrong wrong People Wake up & smell the flowers IT IS NOT GREENER on the other side of the mountain for anything; life, love, child, PETS, parents, marriage. CCAC has been doing this with any Pitts and Pitt mixes for at least 6 years.Before they had their new building you used to have to walk through “death row” to see the available cats. Death row was a room full of any dangerous breeds that were “unadoptable” even if they really were. NC is a mess with it comes to this sort of thing. Between the gas chambers that are used in 30 counties still and garbage like this, the animals need more advocates to find solutions not point out problems.

How many of these breeds become “working” dogs for rescue & recovery groups? Not to mention the vast amounts of service dogs for the handicapped are taken from shelters— most of which are these very breeds, or are mixed with these breeds! Spend your time & efforts on the control of puppy mills, the pet stores that buy from them, ect. — This is an outrage! & Boycotting your area, along w/it’s associates sounds like a great start!

If you are a visitor to the Fayetteville, NC area, be it dog events, cultural events, etc. Please if you are able to financially cancel reservations do so – Money talks, if the city loses monies due to these types of bans they’ll sit up and listen.
If you cancel reservations let the businesses know *why* and include your cancelation in the letter you post to the addresses listed above.
If you are a resident, you may be able stop the immediate ban by doing a class action lawsuit IF the shelter is a city/state funded shelter.
Surely there are other more important laws to consider – abusive parents, drug addicted mothers having babies on the dole…breed legislation should be illegal to even consider. Bad breeders need to pay the price for bad dogs, not those who breed/raise/train responsible doggy “citizens.”

I have a rottie/lab mix and she’s the most mushable dog ever! How dare any one of you kill these animals. It’s not their fault that they’re born as a certain breed! Besides, the OWNERS make them bullies,they aren’t BORN that way.
What about human beings? There are far more “bullying” human beings out in the world that hurt animals AND other human beings! Are we proposing to put them to sleep?
What are you trying to do? Have everyone own a little small dog that can just as easily nip at the back of your feet while you walk? You ought to be ashamed of yourselves!
I don’t care what “supposed statistics” show. Every dog I have ever known or owned that is supposedly a “bully breed” are the most lovable dogs I have ever met. Sure if you beat an animal,do you expect it to trust you or react friendly? It’s like a human child that has been beaten. We have had Great Danes in our lives for 30 years and they grew up with our children and now grandchildren. To label these giants as aggressive and dangerous is a cruel as it comes. Send them to us in Massachusetss, we will take them in. All of our Danes have been rescues.

I’ve been the proud owner or should I say Sister or Mommy to two wonderful rescue Rotts when my children were young. Never have I met more intelligent, loyal, kind, patient, playful, and LOVING animals. Both Ladies died of a very old age. And still many many years later miss my two very best friends to date. Both were referred to as chancy animals. I admit when I first adopted was a bit skeptical. But within 30 minutes of meeting my children, those thoughts were totally disposed of. My Ladies taught me alot about Love and devotion. Most especially my really old Lady. I regretfully had to put her down at the ripe old age of 16. Never not once did I have any reason to second guess my decision to adopt. And if God blessed me with a chance of finding another would do so in a heart beat!!!

This is insane. Whoever even proposed this idea ought to be ashamed of themselves. They obviously have no experience whatsoever with these type of dog breeds. Small breeds are more likely to be “dangerous” than these larger breeds. I know that from experience. I also know that the dogs they are planning on doing this to are the opposite from “dangerous.” All dogs can be dangerous, not just these “bulley breeds.” It all depends on the owener and what they’ve been through, but you can’t decide this or know this right after they come into the shelter. They deserve a chance and shouldn’t be judged this way; it’s not fare. I have one of these “bulley breeds” for myself who I adopted from the pound. He’s a German Sheperd and is anything but aggressive. The only thing you have to be worried about is being licked to death or hit by his tail that constantly wags when he sees people. My Chahuahua, on the other hand, is a different story. He’s the one I have to put up when I have company. These dogs that are considered dangerous make some of the best dogs ever. People need to protest this, and the people who came up with this obsurd idea need some sense knocked into them.

This is completely absurd and outrageous! I cannot believe that people would do this. In my opinion there is no such thing as a ‘bully breed’. Dogs don’t choose their owners, they can’t help it if they are raised wrong. So now we’re going to take it out on the animals and propose that certain breeds are dangerous? Breed has nothing to do with the likelihood of a dog being bad or good, it’s the way they are raised and taken care of. Don’t take it out on the animals! I am completely appalled!

this is the most absurd thing i have ever heard of i own 4 pit mix and they love my children they would rather be with them playing and such but even outside they are very protective of my kids i recently found out that i have a sex offender living nearby and i am comforted to know that my kids can still play outside with no worries of anyone touching them with my dogs outside my dogs have NEVER shown any aggression and my 7 yr old(who is autistic) pulls on their mouths, tail, eyes, etc… they need to do more research before they do something stupid!!!!!

OMG!!! Are you kidding??? I own three Great Danes and they are nothing but loving….huge couch potatoes…great with my kids, my other dogs, my cat, horses….everything…I have also owned German Shepards, Dobbies and Bullys and have never had a problem…..the key to fixing this problem is educating the public on proper dog ownership and raising…do not punish the animal….this is just beyond ridiculous….

This is ludicrous! I had 3 Akitas years ago and have had many German Shepherds thru the years. In fact when I was a tiny baby my shepherd, SHep would sit/babysit me outside with me. As several people said, educating the public on proper dog care. If you dont know much about a breed inquire as much as you can a read. Once again I have to laugh at how ignorant people can be and ban specific breeds. They need to do their homework. This is hearbreaking and not the dogs fault!

Look here it is not the answer, All breeds of dogs are dangerous I see the same amount of damage done by a small breed of dog. Doing this to any dog is not right what so ever, it is the owner’s fault not the dogs fault. People get a dog because they happen to like the breed and to read up on it or even do the training that is requird by the breed and the owners can’t be bothered to what is required in taking of it. I see dog owners have a certain breed of dog I see this all the time and they can’t even handle this dog. Thats why alot of these dogs become agressive and and up being put down due to the owners not taking the time to train and socialize this animal, and a nother thing is people also have a thing about humanizing there dog this also causes agression. Go after the owners not the dogs its not their fault.

There is a military base in Fayetteville, which I am sure is responsible for a lot of the county income and jobs.
I wrote to the county council and told them that if this happens, I will write to my congresswoman and ask that Fayetteville be targeted as a focus of the billions of DoD cuts due to this action. I suggest you do the same. If people cannot be persuaded out of decency, sometimes money talks. Confronted with tens of thousands of people writing congress and asking that Fayetteville be a focus of military budget cuts should scare them.

This is totally unfair and shameful. Anyone supporting such a ban, really needs to check their facts. Talk to the responsible owners of these dogs, stop believeing what the media is telling you. They don’t report all the good these breeds do. The lives that have been saved because of these animals. Do you think the police would have a dangerous dog used to protect and serve? There are several K9 officers that have Shepards, Rotts, and Pitties as a partner. These dogs will lay their lives on the line to protect their families. My son has 2 pitties, an Akita, and his police dog which is of the Shepard family, I have no worries of these animals being around my grandkids ages from 2-15 years. These are loving and loyal animals, who don’t deserve the rep. the media has given them. Don’t punish the dogs punish the low life gutter trash that abuses and turn the dogs dangerous. Any dog can be considered dangerous, even small and toy breeds can be turned. A lot of my friends have pitties as service animals. If we went by your way of thinking, then all animals should be killed. Humans are far more dangerous than these animals. Use facts not fear to decide the fate of these animals. This is insane!!! Since when is it a poor dogs fault for being aggressive?? They are born with a clean slate just like babies and its the human that trains them to act this way. Almost every pitt bull, german shepherd, domerman, chow, that i have met has been extremely friendly! I have a yorkie and his best buddy is a german shepherd!! My family has owned german shepherds and not one was aggressive! This is inhumane and I dont understand how this could even be happening. This is sick for us to be putting animals to sleep and killing them just becuase they are a certain breed. Does that mean we are going to be killing human races too just becasue they are a certain race???? You people should be ashamed to even think of going through with this idea!

That said many laws make their way in first through targeting a specific criminal element and then evolve to encompass a larger swath of the population.

This is so sickening to me. I am a Pit Bull owner, and I just can’t imagine that my dog would never even have had a chance in a shelter. Pit Bulls are already one of the most seen dogs in shelters and they already have very low chances of getting adopted, but god, at least give the poor dogs a CHANCE. It’s not like the dogs asked to be born a certain breed or asked to end up in a shelter. This is so unjust to them. Throw their stupid owners in jail, not the dogs.

Please check your facts. This article has inaccurate information. The breeds listed are incorrect. The ordinance does NOT go into effect Monday, Dec. 6 but there is an Animal Control Board Meeting at 6pm that night and the proposal WILL be introduced for discussion. Please correct the article. I can not get over the Ignorance from the Human Breed . However, the CC Animal Control Board is having a meeting Monday evening to discuss proposing this to the County Planners, who would then determine whether or not to propose it to the County Commissioners for a vote. I cannot believe how idiotic this world is. These animals never asked to be put in this situation, maybe you should put the owners down for animal cruelty. I am a Guardian for the ASPCA and MDSPCA as well. I just adopted a Pit Bull/Pointer mix that two people adopted and then turned back in to the shelter before going back to the MDSPCA. The first owner only wanted her to have puppies and then decided to get rid of her and the second was just plain ignorant and put her in an apartment with no love or attention. My dog “Sydney” is so spoiled now. She loves everyone and has very good mannerisms. I think people should have to go thru and extensive interview to adopt ANY kind of pet or to buy one from a store or breeder. Its not the animals fault but the idiots that get them. I know most Danes are very lovable. The others I do not know a lot about, but have met some out in public that are just as happy as can be loving life. Once again its the wrong crowd that gives something a bad name. If these people only knew what all goes on in a dog/cat pound their heart would break beyond repair if they had one to begin with. We have people that do far worse then you can imagine and they either are let free to do it again or we lock them up and pay for keeping them locked up. However, a dog that defends itself and its family must be destroyed. Really, WHERE THE HELL IS YOUR BRAIN. So if you kid attacks mine can I have them put down. I’m sure all hell would break loose. Maybe before playing “GOD” try looking into what some clown did to provoke an animal before laying all blame on a creature that has no voice, but the GOOD PEOPLE that speak on their behalf!! If I had the room, I would take them all in. Out of reach from those undeserving.

WOW! I have a German Shepard that was a rescue dog & honestly, she is so much sweeter & more mild tempered than any of the other dogs I’ve had (including Labs, which are apparently deemed to have on the best temperaments of any breed). This is ridiculous. When are people going to realize that it isn’t the breed that is the problem, it’s the owner. Don’t discriminate against the dog because of what breed it is, spend 30 seconds with it to observe its temperament before you decide to kill it.

How about we have a law where the owners who make these dogs into supposed “bully breeds” take ownership for what they are doing. The dogs should not have to suffer because they are being trained to do this. I would also agree there needs to be tighter laws on who is breeding dogs. They need to be registered and checked on every few months and also their buyers should have to have their name and info taken too. I think this right here will get rid of the problem. In fact there should be a hold on all breeding because there are so many dogs in shelters right now waiting to die. Some just born to die and a lot of them are purebreds. I think non pure bred dogs are even better but that is just me. The point is we need to re direct the focus of this law towards where it should really be placed. Stop taking it out on the innocent and make the owners/breeders own up!!

I own a Rotti and she is the biggest baby you will ever meet. when we had our foster daughter my Rotti knocked her down and layed on top of her and within a minute our foster daughter was having a sesure and had to go to hospital. if it wasn’t for the dog she could have hurt herself. My mom raised and bread pitbulls…..they were gentle as kittens also in fact my Aunt used to dress her pitbull in clothes and costumes for parties. ANY DOG CAN BE MEAN…….DEPENDS ON THE OWNER/TRAINER.
Personally I’m more affraid of little dogs then I am big dogs cause little dogs bite a whole lot more…..no one makes a bigg deal out of it cause it was a pom or peak-a-poo or some other little breed!!!

This is horrible. I may be an 8th grader but I have a strong disagreement on this. I have a Doberman as a per and he’s family. How could you live with yourself while killing all of these animals that did nothing to you? You all should be ashamed of this. I’m pretty sure no one would care if you all were left to be “put down” by some person you don’t know. It’s not deserved at all. And this will be brought to many peoples attention. Most of all dogs are adaptable , surely all of these are, maybe dogs that have been hurt in the past and don’t like people I could see, but dogs that are perfectly fine? And could be gorgeous Christmas presents for children who want a pet? Think that over how you’re killing a helpless animal .

I might not be right in what I’m about. To say but it is the way I feel. I love my Pittbulls n under no curcomstances would I ever agree with what you are proposing. You say that cerrtain breeds of dogs are dangerious well what if that dog was one of these guys that spend time in prision for murder rape assalt. Why don’t people get the same treatment that these dogs get? Just saying cuz everyone preaches about hunamity but they all sound two faced. Think about it for a min. Would you like it if you had to defend yourself from being hit or kicked by some punk kid like some of these dogs if they just decided that your a pain to the community n had you put down. Pro life aint just for people, its about life.

I have had Dobermans, Great Danes and Chows, and I can safely say that not one of them have even bitten anyone…..as a matter of fact the only one that ever even acted mean was the Chow….and I still to this day believe that a dog knows when a person is safe….they really do……so if my Chow showed any aggression to a person, usually he was correct!!…and the Great Danes have got to be one of the most docile breeds I have EVER had….I have a chi mix and he is about the meanest dog I have ever had and nips almost everyone who comes over….dogs are just like children, they learn what they live!!!! get your facts straight people….geez for a business to handle so many dogs you would think you would have your facts straight!!!

I can’t believe my eyes. Surely noone in their right mind would consider this insane law. Why would anyone think of killing a dog without a chance to prove itself, just because of its breed. I have had experience with a lot of these breeds and never had or lived near a mean one. Is it because of their size? Man has bred these canines to be as big as they can get them but this doesn’t make them mean. Sure, it is the breeder/owner’s responcibility to raise these animals to obey and respect as it is the nippy little dogs. And it is the responsibility of the persons whose hands these dogs fall into to see they have every chance to have a good loving home and a good life. They have the capability of giving to some person or family the love and companionship that only an adopted animal can give.

I am amazed at the aggressiveness this proposal shows, contrasting it with the alleged aggressiveness of the breeds mentioned and targeted to be killed at shelters. I personally own two German Shepherds, great dogs, not aggressive at all, kind with humans, especially children, and one of my brothers owns a Rottweiler, as sweet as my own Shepherds, and he has two young children, who in fact were born after the Rott was in the house. You cannot decide whether a certain breed is more aggressive than other, that’s prejudice against the dogs. The dogs MUST get a chance to be adopted if they are owner surrendered or they’ve been found astray. They can also be sent to non-kill shelters.
Please, go back on this decision and be real humans, not aggressive animals yourselves.

You have got to be kidding me. I have known a bad dog or two, but for the most part a dog is only what it’s trainer makes it into. If you give a dog or any animal love, nurture it, it will most likely be a good companion no matter what the breed. If you go through with this law I hope each and everyone of you who put an animal down because of it’s breed, gets haunted each and every time you close your eyes to sleep. Reincarnate as a “BULLY” dog and get put down yourself…. You are the terrorists of the animal kingdom. If a dog is a mean dog and it can not seem to be conditioned, then put it down, yes…. I would rather see a mean dog put down than a child defaced but there has to be some rhyme or reason for it… Not we will put this dog down because it is a Bully dog. Seriously, this is just disgusting. I’ve owned and raised dogs all of my life. The main breeds have been boxer and schnauzer. I’ll be the first one to tell you that the boxer is one of the most gentle dogs that you would ever see while the miniature schnauzer will bite you as quick as look at you if it felt in any way threatened. The only reason the so called “bully breeds” get the kind of negative feedback they do is because there is sensationalism in the media. I totally agree with destroying an animal that is truly dangerous even if it has been made that way by the human that trained it and should have known better; but to condemn an entire breed of dog on a limited number of examples is entirely unreasonable. I realize that there are high numbers (not high numbers in comparison to the number of dogs of that breed in the US) of attacks in some of these breeds but that is the fault of the owner in most cases and to condemn the breed is beyond the pall. In my opinion, you will find true vicious natures more prevalent in the small cute and fluffy breeds than you will in the larger. I’ve been bitten once by a doberman rottweiler mix; I’ve been bitten more times than I care to think about while grooming poodles; cocker spaniels, schnauzers and other mixed small breeds and my chihuahua was a mean little bitch who would bite anyone outside our family if they got within lunging distance and our schnauzer was worse he’d even bite family members. Furthermore, to put mastiffs in that category is totally ridiculous. The mastiff is known as the gentle giant in dog breeding circles.

In your article you wrote that it is human fault that makes their dogs agrressive n also blood fights. You have said that it is the caretaker fault not the dogs fault. So, why punish the dogs? The murdering of these defenceless animals outrages me! It is NOT the breeds that are violent, it is the people that raise them, that train them to be violent! Every animal has the right to be adopted into a secure, loving home. After they have been fully assessed and approved by a trained proffesional! To be sure the are suitable for adoption. ANY dog can be trained to be aggressive and violent. If put in the wrong hands! But if people that care take these animals in, they can be just as loving and gentle as a small dog! Or cat. Or any pet people own. They have to be treated properly! Hell, even a pure wolf can be tamed to be a gentle, loving companion to humans if trained properly. This “law” doesn’t even give these animals a chance to prove they have the ability to be loving gentle pets to someone who would love them until they they die! (natural deaths) This is like being racist towards people with diferent skin tones than the majority of the people that live on any given continent. If this is enforced, I hope you consider that some little boy or girls best friend was just put to sleep because no one gave them a chance to prove they could be a gentle loving animal because of there breed. And the original owner of the pet could not keep them because of living arrangements, allergies, ect.

Kind of a PETA type site but this is a bit of a ridiculous and broad based proposal. This is an extreme case that probably pushes too hard and too fast but it is happening in concert all over cities and towns, big and small.
It plays a bit into disarming the public, dogs of some of these breeds are good survival/hunting comrades and may be a sign of things to come in a right to bear (potentially) vicious dogs. The courts have certainly made their non-tolerance for dogs when they attack and the media always highlights dog attacks on the local stations and papers every single time it happens.
There’s probably something connected to health and liability insurance tied to dog breeds as well in place or planned for forced purchase. They already have their foot in the door with forced registration and there is an effort to chip pets for tracking, and that could evolve into a mandate.
No Chip? No Insurance? No Licence? No Neutering/Spaying? No Dog. That would probably price these breeds of dogs out of reach for the common man.
I suspect genetically based pre-crime initiative may being soft sold over time here and this is but the tip of the iceberg.

Non Kill Shelters….that is all I have to say. Although it is tough to allocate large amounts of open space for the purpose of basically “herding” and housing large numbers of animals, there are ways to do this, but whether or not you kill the animals or keep them alive; well that is a small issue compared to whole.
What really needs to happen is that dog breeders of all kinds should be banned and shut down. We are producing unneeded, genetically flawed animals for the pure purpose of vanity. We DONT NEED THESE THINGS.
Anyways, this is a stupid law, but it does consider several things including the large populations of strays as well as the total cost to house animals. This is just one way to try to provide a solution to these issues. The breed aspect is just the excuse.

People make me sick that do this to animals. As if the animals asked to be born. It’s the humans fault for not spaying and neutering their pets. It’s also the cities fault for not enforcing a spaying and neutering law. Cities should promote this and even help fund it. To put an animal down because of the breed is racist in my opinion. It reminds me of Americas past and even WW2. You can do your best to kill off a breed, but ultimately, they won’t go away. In the end, you are just bringing more sorrow to your city. If the dog is truly a threat to society and has a track record of biting others, I can understand this enforcement. However, I believe every dog is entitled to prove it is fit to live.
Can you imagine how your kids would feel knowing your job is to order dogs to sleep for no reason? God forbid your dog gets lose and the pound takes it in and kills it. I’m sure your feelings would change then.

THIS IS RIDICULOUS.. just because of ignorant people these dogs won’t have a chance to find a forever home and make someones life as great as mine, I’m an owner of four beautiful pit bulls and the mother of a 9 month old son, my “vicous” dogs treat my baby as if he were their own. How could people fathom to kill these innocent dogs just because of the media and stories! It is the owner, environment and the over all way a dog is raised no matter what breed that determines the way the will act.. This makes me sick that these dogs won’t even have a chance to change someones lifes.. Maybe if people did some research they will find about how a pit bull saved her family in their burning house while being burned all over her body in the process, or how a German Shepard saved his owner when someone tried to attack him, or how two pit bulls changed two autistic childrens lives for the BETTER!.. I could list stories forever about how these “bully breeds” saved their families in some way.. I just wish for once people would do some research before determining a dog just by the type of breed it is, we respect all human races, when will a law be passed to respect all dog breeds!!!!! Until the day I die I will always stand by any bully breed and put in a good name for them because they don’t discriminate on us.

Hey! When can the animal lovers community enact a ban on ignorant government officials?! This is ridiculous. I have had 2 great danes so far and all I can say is…REALLY? The two I had thought they were a small dog and were nothing but huge boney butted babies! A ban/instant death sentence on ANY breed is insane. I have either had or been close to all these breeds (with the exception of mastiff and akita) and have never experienced or heard of anything but loving dispositions. Why can’t we just immediately euthanize those suspected of terrorism? I mean if someone looks like they might be a threat why take the chance? Shoot on sight! Sounds pretty ugly huh? That is exactly what Cumberland County is doing to its animal population. It is unconstitutional to do this to humans so why is it not unconstitutional to do it to specific breeds of dogs?

This is disgusting… I have a beautiful 2 year old shepherd mix that I wouldn’t trade for the world and he far outshines the pomeranian, jack russell, and aussie that my family has. He’s a good natured, smart, sweet dog that is full of energy and life. My best friend’s 2 and 6 year olds can sit on his back, pull his ears, hang on his tail, crawl all over him and shove their fingers up his nose and he’s never so much as blinked at them. The only aggression I’ve ever see him show was to a man who was trying to hurt me and thank God my beautiful german shepherd mix happened to see it. He didn’t even hurt him… he pinned him to a wall by his chest and stayed there. Never bit him or tried to, just pinned him and growled until I called him off and the man left. How is that any even remote display of unwanted behavior?? These dogs have the temperament they have because it’s valuable! Military or police dogs, search and rescue dogs, drug dogs, therapy dogs and individual service dogs for the blind or disabled. Many of them are the shepherds and bully breeds because of their intelligence, hardiness and ability to defend while maintaining a pleasant demeanor. I certainly wouldn’t want to put the task of tackling a burglar, saving a drowning man, defending a blind or disabled person, or even guarding children up to a pomeranian or a pekignese. Not to say these breeds are unwanted but there’s reason for the big and bully breeds! To dispose of them due to your own lack of willingness to do more for them speaks poorly for your commitment to the stewardship of these animals. There is always another option. Shelters are filling up and it’s hard to find homes for them all… but there’s several breed specific rescues one in Georgia that I know about specializes in the shepherd breeds but has taken others as well… And never seems to run out of room. Maybe even donate some of the younger dogs to police schools or the military or therapy groups. It’s not impossible… God forbid it require you to lift a finger to see it done. This is shameful and disgusting and I hope to heavens that it doesn’t go through.

This is absolutely terrible!!!! people who do this are sick and wrong. I have had my two American Bulldogs for 6 years and i wouldn’t trade them for the world!!! we have had many dogs before that were not a part of the previously listed breeds and we had to give them to other people because of the danger they posed to us!! those dogs that we had before we had raised as puppies and taught them well and gave them so much love and affection but they were the aggressive and dangerous ones not our bulldogs!! They have never hurt a thing!! we play with them in the backyard and in the house and they always are gentle and fun!! just to kill dogs based on who they are is like killing people based on their race!! it’s nuts!!!!! This is so so wrong. i am apalled at this and i can not believe people could be so horrible and disgusting. they are murdering those dogs for no reason other than their breed. it’s sick.

The best dog i ever had, was a german shepard who i adopted from the pound. Just because they happen to be one of these breeds doesn’t mean they are bad,it is the people who raise them that make them mean. It is people that make them bad, give them a chance to prove how well of a friend they can be, in reality they are better then people.

This is so incredibly sad!
The problem is never the dogs – it is the humans! Would anyone logically say that Michael Vick’s dogs had a problem? NO! Michael Vick had the problem and cruelly inflicted his meanness, greed, and lack of respect for living creatures on them. This is evidenced by the fact that these poor dogs, despite the cruelty they had to endure, were rehabilitated and successfully adopted out to loving families. If anything, this shows the depth of a dog’s ability to forgive humans for their transgressions and still be able to show love when they are treated with love and respect.
I have a shepherd/boxer mix and a boxer (also considered a “bully breed”). They were both rescues and were abused. They are the best dogs in the world and they are my “youngest kids”. They love us unconditionally and are wonderful with people and other animals alike. (We also have a rescue kitty who is very timid but the three of them are good friends.)
This is the most unjust thing I have ever heard. An owner surrenders a dog and they are immediately put to sleep? May God forgive these people as their proposed actions are truly a sin against “the least of these”.

Where is the legal documentation on this? Meaning– a copy of the reported policy revision that would have required breed specific legislation at a county level to have been voted on, passed, and implemented in order for this type of a shelter policy revision to have been enacted. Make no mistake, I’m all for information on animal welfare regardless of what it is deserving to be heard, but posting inflammatory & non-factual information serves one purpose and needs to be taken under careful consideration before employing such a tactic; wasting valuable time and efforts to hunt down the factual & needed information to understand what’s really going on does nothing but waste valuable time and efforts which last I knew and checked….animals don’t have the luxury to have wasted.

What a ridiculous policy. These dogs are sweet and loving as any other. I have owned Shepard’s, Chow’s, Pit’s, Boxer’s and they have all been wonderful dogs. My friend has a miniture poodle that has bit her many times and bit me once. It’s not the size of the dog that causes them to bite. When will these dumb people learn. Give them the chance they deserve. Almost all dogs can be loving once given some love in return.

This is insanity! What is wrong with you people ? I have had nothing but German Shepherds and Dobermans my whole life and they are the best dogs in the whole world.
Why are animals being penalized for stupid people that do not have the first clue on how to treat a dog. Some of these people shouldn’t even have kids I can assure you that there will be a whole lot of noise made by dog lovers all across the nation if this plan goes into action.
I would also like to note that the title bully breeds is not appropriate. These are working breeds and they are used in military and police and rescue and drug seizures and bomb sniffing and etc. I would call them rescue animals sinse they are willing to give up their lives for humans.

I’m a helluva lot more afraid of Chihuahuas than any of the breeds listed above. My 2 Great Danes are absolute loves. They get along famously at the dog park with adults, kids, and other dogs. It’s all in how they’re raised. Every pit bull I’ve ever met was a sweetie! This is a viscious short-cut so they don’t have to care for the dogs.

I have two service dogs. One is a Dutch Shepherd and the other is a Doberman. They have changed my life. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to leave my home, walk, run errands, or live a somewhat normal life. I’m glad I don’t live in Fayetteville.

I think this is absolutely horrible. I have many friends and family who either have or have had at least one or more of these dogs and never had any problems. I have a dog of my own at home and would never allow anything to happen to her. I certainly hope these people wake up and realize that even though dogs might not be “people” they still deserve to be here just like we do.

I have to say this is pure out right hatred from a human to an animal. I have volunteered for a rescue group . At the time I volunteered I went into the shelter, tested the dogs using my own human children ( at that time they were 7 and 6 years old) and i used my dogs to test for dog to dog aggression. My dogs at that time were a Bull Mastiff and a border collie/lab mix (which was a rescue as a puppy from the same pound that they were going to kill).
I currently have in my home a German Shepherd, 3 mini dachshunds, and we still have our border collie/lab. My mastiff passed away of cancer. I was raised with A doberman, rottie, German Shepherd, and a German Shepherd/Timber Wolf mix. All were the best and most loyal companions I could have ever asked for. I had rescued pit bulls and pit mixes, mastiff mixes,dobies, any breed you can think of that passed the test I rescued. Even those with food aggression I brought home and worked with them so they would not be killed. I had many dogs in and out of my life, some that they said there was no hope for like a Malinoise/Wolf mix, they said he was due to be killed that night, he was behind the chain and my daughter at that time was 9 years old, they started freaking out when my daughter opened the cage, walked in and he exposed his belly to her and he melted like butter with her touch, I taught my kids how to respect animals and to use your body language, soft touch, low voice. Needless to say he came home with us, he had 9 years of being loved and knowing the warmth of a bed, homemade food, walks, hikes in the mountains, walks on the beach, and lots of love by his girl (my daughter). killing an animal because of their breed is ignorance.
As the old saying goes..their are NO BAD DOGS….JUST UNEDUCATED OWNERS.
I have seen more aggression in a pom than any other breed, My neighbor had a pom and he was an ankle bitter, Why dont you put a ban on humans? You would not do that would you? So why a ban on these wonderful breeds? And last time I looked, when an animal is adopted from a shelter the new owner is responsible for the dog not the shelter. I would suggest training classes, education classes for those who want to adopt and make it mandatory classes when adopting from a shelter or even a rescue grioup. This would educate the new owners and also teach them how to improve their pets training the correct way. but that is just a suggestion.

Do you realize that a lot of these breeds are the very breeds that work to find you, go to war for you and to protect you? They are intelligent and trainable! And all of these listed breeds are born lovable. It is the cruelty of man that changes that. I think it is a cop-out to kill all of these breeds and is merely a way to justify needlessly disposing of a creature that deserves to live and be loved. As a young professional and law student I am in the position to decide where I would like to reside and potentially practice one day. I am also the owner of a beautiful 4 year old Pitbull. Because of people like you, whom are obviously uneducated and ignorant as to the breed of these dogs in which you are trying to extinguish, my decision is made a lot easier. I can assure you that there are many educated people who share my same belief. You are doing an injustice to these breeds and your community. For the sake of both, I would recommend that you reconsider your policy. Please do some in-depth research on each one of these breeds and use reliable resources. There has been research conducted by professionals that shows that these breeds are in no way, shape, or form more dangerous than any other breed. It is so disappointing in this day and age that people are still so closed minded and unwilling to see the truth. Again, I urge you to please reconsider your policy.

Having work in a vet hospital I find this policy one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. I have worked with almost every breed you can think of and I would rather deal with the pitbulls, shepards, rotties, and other “dangerous” breeds than the yappy and nippy dogs like yorkies and chihuahuas. You cant define an entire breed just as you would not generically label one group of people. A dogs behavior is usually a direct reflection on the way they are raised, handled, and trained. Blame the idiot people that give these dogs a bad name but don’t punish the innocent dogs.

These dogs do not need to be killed. People should not get these dogs if they are not going to train them to be obedient. I was bitten by a Rottweiler last Thanksgiving, but I did not blame the dog. It was the owner’s fault for not training the him. Don’t blame dogs because owner’s let them become aggressive. Any dog can be trained to be obedient. Don’t take it out on the dogs!!!!

As for the story itself, the info is not true. I called the shelter on Friday to check it out, after being told by a reliable source that the story wasn’t true. The staff member confirmed it, the hearing is on Monday the 5th, open to the public, nothing has been passed. How can they do this to innocent animals whom did not ask to be born and taught how to be nasty and fight. They obviously had bad owners we shoud find the previous owners and put them to sleep. I just went today and adopted a Shepherd/ Dane mix from my shelter! WHY? Because ALL my dogs and cats are either adopted or RESCUED! According to this article I have BAD dogs! My Shepherd is 13 years old and is so sweet, my 4 year old mutt is a doll, this little guy I got today has been abused and tossed aside. He WILL be an outstanding animal because I thought enough to give him a CHANCE! The Shelters in question need to find Rescue groups for these breeds because they are not bad dogs depending on how they are raised.

I have a rott/chow mix who is the most amazing dog! I couldn’t imagine not having him in my life. If the shelter had went by this policy then my Harley would never had given me the opportunity to have him by my side. Every dog deserves a chance in life. It is not their fault what breed they are and how they are sterotyped. It is all about the owner, not the breed. These people should be ashamed at how ignorant they are.

I am 63 and have had chows since I was a child Never had any problem with any of them wanting to bite someone. I now have a male chow, male chow/lab mix, male german shepherd mix, and male husky and a female samoya They all get along and all are the sweetest dogs just wanting someone to love on them All these dogs were adopted from shelters after they were grown. I have never had a problem with them wanting to bite anyone if anything it is to get them to quit licking on anyone who comes around them I volunteer at a shelter and the dogs are tested to make sure they are safe around people.

I wish to ask you to reconsider your proposed breed ban. While a realize that shelters in this nation are filling to the brim with homeless animals, this action will serve nothing except the murder of innocent souls. Breed Specific Legislation is inherently bias, and is no different than a poll tax on the poor, or colored and whites toilets. Just as a person is not intrinsically bad because they are black, brown, white or a red, an animal is not naturally evil. It is the evils imposed upon them by HUMANS that traumatize and damage the animals soul, causing dangerous behavior. I beg you if you have any conscious, moral standing, or ethical responsibility not to punish the unfortunate victims of human ignorance and brutality, but rather to deny this proposed motion, and instead redraft a law requiring permits, background checks and in home inspections of breeders, boarders, and trainers. I beg you to create a cap on animal breeding births and sales. If you stop the over-breeding and abuse of these animals, you stop the problem. My proposal would reduce strays, animal shelter populations and expenses, and generate revenue on a city, county and state level.
In America, a child care worker is required to pass these requirements. Most breeds of dogs are as intelligent as a 3-5 year old child, why shouldn’t their caretakers have the same responsibility.
Go home tonight and look in to the eyes of your pets and your children. How would they look at you if they knew you voted for genocide?

This really sickens me. 11 yrs ago I adopted a chow mix from Cumberland County animal shelter who had been in foster care. The poor fellow had been returned twice because the folks who adopted him claimed him to be aggressive… I beg to differ, and his foster mom begged to differ. He had been injured prior to coming to the shelter. He was found living under an abandoned trailer with his wife and their 3 pups. They thought he had been hit by a car and he had a bad back right hip. I personally think he had been shot, and I have my reasons as to why I believe this to be, but it pained him and he did not like anyone messing with his hind quarters. We believe both of the previous adopters had been trying to train him to sit and pressed on his back end too hard, or got too rough with him and in his nervousness at being somewhere new he snapped at them. Well, a dog will snap if you hurt it, especially an older dog who is unfamiliar with their new environment. The sweet fellow took one look at me and that was all she wrote, so to speak. He wouldn’t take his eyes off of me, even when others wandered over to visit him, and he barked his head off at me every time I walked away from him. My mother was insistent that I take him, I did not want a dog, and seeing how he reacted to my walking away I reluctantly agreed. His foster made sure I had experience with the chow chow breed, I have had many years experience having grown up around 2 pure bred chows, and was excited to send him home with someone who could understand him and handle him. I say “handle him” in complete jest. He was an easy train, we just had to work on sit a little differently than the normal press the butt down and give the command so that he didn’t hurt his back end. I was made aware of his injury, and it upset me that the other folks who tried to adopt him did not take his pain into consideration when they tried to train him. He and I were inseparable for 10 years before he passed (he was 3 or 4 when I adopted him) and my life will never be the same. It makes me so angry that the same place that took the time to foster my little bear after he had been dumped off to them twice would accept this ordinance considering the shelter staff and his foster adored him so much they dubbed him “Lancelot” because he was such a sweet heart. He was renamed when he came to his forever home because I wanted him to start over fresh and new and know that he was loved. Bela Lugosi will forever be in my heart. He was my soul mate, and it breaks my heart to think that other happy fellows like him are going to be murdered before someone like me has a chance to come along and rescue them. Oh please, oh please, don’t let this pass… give them a chance. At lease give them a temperament test… say NO to racism against dog breeds and start judging the individual dog. Had this been in order when my sweet one was there, he and I would have never met and I honestly don’t know where I would be had it not been for his love and loyalty. I did not rescue him, he rescued me and my life is all the better for it. I miss him everyday and will for the rest of my life. OMG they are saying a Husky is dangerous? They obviously know NOTHING… Huskies are one of the least aggressive dog breeds..and I am PROUDLY owned by a Husky. I groom dogs for a living and have been bitten by more Cockers and Poodles than any Pit, Sheppy,or Husky. I have adopted 3 GSD’s in the past and the one I have now is an absolute gem, you need to look into the jack russell’s who snap and bite and anything and everything before you need to worry about GSD’s!

Dear Members of the Cumberland County Animal Control,
On December 5th, a new rule will come into effect that all dogs identified as “dangerous breeds” that are turned in to animal control will be euthanized. The eminently practical reason behind this new ordinance is that it will reduce liability issues for your organization and reduce incidence of dog attacks, etc.
This is not the first time that highly practical ideas such as this one have been proposed. For example, in 1729, Jonathan Swift penned “A Modest Proposal” to suggest that the most practical way to deal with a surplus of poor children was to eat them. It is really a shame that there are not more courageous groups such as yours who can cut through the extraneous sentimentality and proceed directly to the most practical solution.
I’m sure that the first time you are confronted with a hysterically crying boy who has just found out that his beloved lost pet has been euthanized because he is a “dangerous breed” you will take advantage of the opportunity to give the lad a stern lecture on the superfluity of animal attachments.

I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba ,Canada. I live in one of the city’s that have banned pitbulls, if the dog looks like a pitty, you have 24 hours to remove it out of the city or risk animal control collecting the dog and potentially being distroyed, you are only allowed to bring a pitty into the city if it is a dog show or if dog is in a performance where as soon as the dog is done with show or performance has to be muzzled immediently. you are however, allowed to own a pitty
outside the city limits, Ontario has a whole province ban, which was quite embarrassing for Canada when ceasar Milan was doing his tour and was not allowed to bring junior into the province, which was freaking retarded since it was Canada who invited him, Saskchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia all allow citizens to own pitbulls. The funny thing, Ontario and Manitoba have more dog attacks per year than the province that allow pitty’s to live with citizens.
I’ve owned 3, I was living in British Columbia, sadly, I had to move back to Manitoba which I was forced to give up my dogs.
When will everyone realize IT’S NOT THE BREED BUT THE OWNERS, it seems each decade, another breed goes on the “most wanted” list, in the 70’s, it was the doberman, 80’s the German Shepard, the 90’s the Rottweiler , and roughly the last 10 years it’s been the pitbull. Yet, does anyone know what breed was the number 1 mauler of children…any guesses….it’s one of the most popular breeds to the day…the cocker spaniel. Now why isn’t that breed getting a bad rap, my grandma had a poodle, which was a demon dog, and I have the scars to prove it. I think breeders, rescues, shelters and pet stores should start getting more picky on who their selling their animals to. Neighbors, get involved, if you suspect someone backyard breeding, dog-fighting or just neglecting a dog-report it. Your no better than the person doing abusive things to a dog if you turn a blind eye to it. People thinking of getting a dog, go to a local shelter and become a foster, this will give you an idea on what time, effort and responsiblity goes into dog ownership, it also allows you to study a breed that may or may not be suitable to your life style, and if you decide maybe a dog is not such a good idea, you can return it, your not stuck with it. I find it such a cop out to blame the dog for it’s actions, what do expect will happen when you take a dog, tie it up to a chain, if the dogs lucky it may have a dog house but most times they have no shelter, they are ignored, neglected, have no human interaction and may never see another dog in it’s lifetime, they might get food and water but not a regular thing, will never see a vet let alone be spayed or neutered, are never taught and manners let alone basic obedience. And will never see the inside of a house. It turns out to be more of a nucense then a best friend. What do you expect-it’s a ticking time bomb. First time dog owners should also not be allowed to own such a powerful breed of dog. So inconclusion, don’t blame the dog, it’s the human distorting this beautiful breed.

I so tally agree with every word you have written….I have had dogs all my life…cockers, chows, rotties, boxers and various other breeds….and all have been such softies they were bordering on stupid….A dogs behavior is most assuredly a reflection on the owner who teaches the animal either GOOD or BAD habits…..if anybody is to be put down, put down the moronic imbeciles who tease and beat their animals so turning them into terrified bodies who will them attack anything that provokes it…whilst trying to defend itself from more beatings….that is the problem with the animal it no longer knows NOT who to trust….

I work in an Animal Hospital in Las Vegas Nevada so I have seen many different breeds of dogs come through our doors in the last 17 years…I for one would not kill any of those breeds I would put s question on Chihuahuas, Min Pins, Shiba Inus, Shih Tzu and Cats especially I have nearly lost a finger due to a cat bite…I have never been bitten or even felt intimidated by any of the breeds that were listed in your list…You need to be educated about the breeds not what the community wants…

England tried to ban pit bulls and lifted the ban when they discovered they had 10 times the bites from dogs such as black labs and tiny little yorkies for crying out loud make the people take dog training classes!

I cannot believe that a shelter would single out certain breeds to be killed like this. It is not the dogs that we need to be concerned with but the owners and how they train the dogs. The owners need to be responsible owners.Not all dogs from these breeds are bad. I have a 10 year old husky named Sissy, I literally call her “my guardian angel”. Sissy is a sweet and loving dog she has never attempted to hurt anyone. Even when my son was two he would sit on her back and lay on her while pinning her to the floor pretending to be the crocodile hunter. She would just turn her head, lick him on the cheek and wag her tail the whole time. Does this sound like a violent dog to you? My son has ADHD so he has always been very hyper yet Sissy would watch over him like he was her own. She has saved our family from a fire in our heating system on three separate occasions. She woke us up in time for us to react each time. Our smoke detector had malfunctioned and wasn’t working.She has also saved me from a robber with a knife and an intruder in our home.Both of whom she scared off with only a bark. She has more than earned her keep in this family. Just imagine what my life would have been like if we hadn’t adopted her from a shelter? I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for our “Teddy bear ” of a dog. SISSY, A HUSKY!!!! The new policy saddens and angers me at the same time. Please reconsider. A simple waiver signed by the adoptive family would be the solution.

Thank you for the updated article from an actual newspaper. I still would not move to Cumberland County now because they are trying this. I’d say maybe HSUS or ASPCA could take those dogs in the shelter there, but THEY don’t do that. People think HSUS and ASPCA that spends millions of dollars a year helps shelters and dogs and cats across the country, but that is what rescue groups do, not HSUS or ASPCA. Money should go to rescue groups to help them find room for more dogs and cats. There is a new Humane Society for Shelters- ( http://www.humaneforpets.com ) out that is promoting adopt local and donate local. Because money going to HSUS does not help your local shelters. People also need to spay/neuter, and stop the over population and we won’t need shelters.

Pieces of shit!!! My mom has owned 2 chihuahuas in the past and all of them have tried to bite me!!! So I guess we should euthanize ALL of them right? Morons. My best friend Rachel has 2 Pit Bulls named Louie and Bindi, they are both soooo precious and extremely sweet!! They both think they are lap dogs and end up squishing my bladder haha. Bindi is a BIG kisser lol. My other best friend Taylor whom Rachel lives with has a German Shepherd named Pumpkin and a Pit Bull puppy named Luna (Bindi and Louies baby) who are also fantastic and very sweet dogs and they ALL get along great. They play like crazy, they’re loud when they play but never get too rough and even when I try to get Bindi or Louie to play with ME they aren’t interested they only want to play with the other dogs. They are best friends and I love them like they are my own pooches. The only reason people don’t freak out about chihuahuas is because they are small. They may be small but they can still lay a hurting on you!!! Chihuahua attacks happen more often then people think, they just aren’t extreme so people don’t make big deals about it like they are about bigger dogs. It depends solely on the owner on how the dog was raised from a pup. Just like a human, just in comparison, if you beat a child than more than likely that child will end up beating its own child. If you beat a dog it will end up biting other dogs and humans. People just don’t understand that!!! So are we going to start putting down ALL 5th graders just because they bully kids in a lower grade? I mean honestly thats pretty stupid.

I have a Rottie and 2 Labs and my Rottie is calmer and acts better than my 2 labs do. I have had her since she was baby and she will be 4 years old in 3 days. My sister had a pit bull that is very well behaved she hated to give him to a new home but she is still a puppy and was to hyper for her with a new baby. My 4 year old nephew could what ever he wanted to to him and he just laid there and took it all NEVER once growled or nipped or bit him. My sister also has a 4 year old boxer which she has had since it was a baby and she is a very well behaved dog and she is the same way as the pit bull my nephew can do what he wants to her. Its all in how these animals are raised and trained. Yes, they are protective of their home and owners, but isn’t that why you have a big dog for a companion and protection. Even my labs are protective of their home and owners. If you want to punish someone for these dogs that behave poorly PUNISH their OWNERS not them. They do as they are taught. I hope you reconsider this action and in the mean time I will pray for these poor animals that are being treated unfairly because of their breed. ITS NOT THEIR FAULT!!! PUNISH THE OWNERS!!!!!

It seems that people in and out of the county that read “visit Cumberland County for vacation” , or “move your business to Cumberland county should read “do not move to or visit Cumberland County with a large breed dog, or any dog because they can add small dogs if they choose”. Companies do not move your company to cumberland county because you and your employees will not be able to keep their loved pets. Hit them where it hurts the pocketbook. All counties try to bring people and new business to their “wonderful counties”. Has the Associated Press or any of the Business papers written an article about this? If I had a business or wanted to move there I would have no notice. Which now I don’t want to move there, nor would I ever. If they can make such a change for large dogs, they can change anything they want, and people outside of Cumberland county should realize it before they move there. When it comes to money they should change their tune.

I don’t even know what to say…..except please don’t!! If this would have been@n the case 5 years ago…. I would now not have the most incredible 3 dogs. My pitbull mix, my rottie mix and my shepherd mix all help me with my rescue work. My current 3 dogs are all rescued from shelters and were not in good or the best conditions but now rehabilitated very loving to children of all ages!

I have 2 English Mastiffs and they are the gentle giants the breed is known for. In fact I have never heard of Mastiffs or Danes being a bully breed. You should do your research before you lump all large dogs into that category.

I’ve seen meaner poodles and chihuahuas than I have a German Shepherd or a Rott!! This is the lazy, easy solution for this county. When do we hold the owners accountable? There needs to be better management of the adoption process, and microchipping. Start there. The local military commands also needs to get actively involved.

As an owner of a German Shepherd rescue this is appalling. These animals need a chance to be rehabilitated. My dog was hit by a bus in Brooklyn, NY and left for dead by her owner. The Brooklyn Animal Foster Network arranged her surgery and we nursed her back to health. Now she is 100% healthy and a valued member of the family. She is well behaved and loving and deserved the second chance she got.

Just as the saying goes: “Guns don’t kill people, People kill people”…the same holds true here….these dogs are not a “bad breed” it’s the owners or handlers that make them what they end up. I have seen all the “bully breeds” named here live in loving families with small children and never have one insident. I have also seen a mixed mutt that isn’t a “bully breed” bite someone, but after prevoked. I have had Rots, Dobbies, german shepards in my family over the years and not once did they ever cause any trouble. But I have seen some nasty ankle biter dogs that would bite you just for looking at them. So to say we need to rid ourselves of Pit Bulls and such is just the ignorance of humans talking on something they know not. Better hope someone doesn’t decide YOU are a harm to the public or you’ll be put down too!

To Whom It Concerns,
I am writing today to express my grave concern regarding your breed ban proposal by enacting a 72-hour-kill plan in Cumberland County Animal Control in Fayetteville, NC, to affect all Dobermans, Rottweilers, Chow Chows, German Shepherds, Great Danes, Pitbulls, Mastiffs (all bully breeds), Akitas, and Huskies. This “vicious dog” or “BSL” ordinance illegalizes the ownership of the particular dog breeds named, the reason for which is to prevent any liability for injuries before or after a state in the shelter even though a simple waiver would prove sufficient regarding that concern.
Although the premise of this proposal is inherently biased and potentially unconstitutional, it is important to recognize it is based on what I would define as erroneous information, inaccurate witness accounts, and according to inequitable circumstances. To target particular canine breeds according to hysterical outbursts, impetuous reactions to news accounts, and false testimony is pure conjecture and serves no purpose other than creating conflict and dividing the community. This is neither productive nor beneficial. The inclination to protect the community from any potential canine attacks is both understandable and admirable; however, while our objective is equal our strategies differ.
Please allow me to elaborate. Dog attack accounts are ubiquitous, the media seemingly pandering to the universal desire for exaggerated and biased events. For example “pit bull” seems to be a loaded phrase, no longer merely representing a canine breed but rather responsible for evoking images of horrific, bloody fights, sadistic people, and a grossly prejudiced level of fear. To allow these dogs to be defined by a select few using propaganda and exaggerated and even false claims is unjust, unprincipled, and unethical. Please acknowledge that statistics can be manipulated to support any theory; when one theorizes using data to support such, one inevitably selects biased information. It is imperative that this situation not be approached from your theory that certain breeds are innately dangerous. Indeed, if I had the inclination, I am confident I could establish that miniature pinschers and labradors are the two most aggressive, menacing canine species using distorted accounts and manufactured or embellished “facts” to substantiate my position. Concentrating on the species rather than the problem of negligent owners, dog attacks, or dog bites in general is illogical and unfairly targets particular breeds, compliant dogs, and their responsible caretakers.
I am certain you are well aware of the arguments against breed-specific legislation (BSL): any breed can be potentially dangerous depending on the circumstances; any breed of dog can be trained to act in dangerous manners; any breed of dog can be provoked to fight in defensive situations; liability should be assigned to irresponsible people who fail to leash or train their dogs in appropriate manners; people who illegally support dog-fighting or other similar pursuits will commit crimes regardless of existing breed-specific legislation. BSL is therefore not an accurate or reliable deterrent, victimizing innocent dogs and their caretakers while neglecting to address those culpable: people who intentionally neglect their dogs or those who deliberately train them in aggressive behaviors. Enacting BSL only propagates breed-specific fear and irrational approaches to valid concerns. When communities become immune to legitimate problems by unreasonably focusing on targeted breeds and their owners, the problem only escalates, allowing deviant behaviours to flourish; when people start questioning the absence of enforcement and solution, you will determine that BSL is a fallible approach to controlling or preventing dog attacks.
Although the potential unconstitutionality of BSL is beyond the scope of my knowledge, please allow me this opportunity to share with you a few statements as taken from A community approach to dog bite prevention, American Veterinary Medical Association Task Force on Canine Aggression and Human-Canine Interactions. JAVMA, Vol 218, No. 11, June 1, 2001, and although these statements may not represent the most current data, JAVMA is decidedly unbiased with respect to BSL and can be considered an impartial source :
Animal control legislation has traditionally been considered a constitutionally legitimate exercise of local government power to protect public safety and welfare. Breed-specific ordinances, however, raise constitutional questions concerning dog owners’ fourteenth amendment rights of due process and equal protection. When a specific breed of dog is selected for control, 2 constitutional questions are raised: first, because all types of dogs may inflict injury to people and property, ordinances addressing only 1 breed of dog appear to be underinclusive and, therefore, violate owners’ equal protection rights; and second, because identification of a dog’s breed with the certainty necessary to impose sanctions on the dog’s owner is impossible, such ordinances have been considered unconstitutionally vague and, therefore, to violate due process.
Breed or type bans—Concerns about ‘dangerous’ dogs have caused many local governments to consider supplementing existing animal control laws with ordinances directed toward control of specific breeds or types of dogs. Members of the Task Force believe such ordinances are inappropriate and ineffective. Statistics on fatalities and injuries caused by dogs cannot be responsibly used to document the “dangerousness” of a particular breed, relative to other breeds, for several reasons. First, a dog’s tendency to bite depends on at least 5 interacting factors: heredity, early experience, later socialization and training, health (medical and behavioral), and victim behavior. Second, there is no reliable way to identify the number of dogs of a particular breed in the canine population at any given time (eg, 10 attacks by Doberman Pinschers relative to a total population of 10 dogs implies a different risk than 10 attacks by Labrador Retrievers relative to a population of 1,000 dogs).
Third, statistics may be skewed, because often they do not consider multiple incidents caused by a single animal. Fourth, breed is often identified by individuals who are not familiar with breed characteristics and who commonly identify dogs of mixed ancestry as if they were purebreds. Fifth, the popularity of breeds changes over time, making comparison of breed-specific bite rates unreliable. Breed-specific ordinances imply that there is an objective method of determining the breed of a particular dog, when in fact, there is not at this time. Owners of mixed-breed dogs or dogs that have not been registered with a national kennel club have no way of knowing whether their dog is one of the types identified and whether they are required to comply with a breed-specific ordinance. In addition, law enforcement personnel typically have no scientific means for determining a dog’s breed that can withstand the rigors of legal challenge, nor do they have a foolproof method for deciding whether owners are in compliance or in violation of laws. Such laws assume that all dogs of a certain breed are likely to bite, instead of acknowledging that most dogs are not a problem. These laws often fail to take normal dog behavior into account and may not assign appropriate responsibilities to owners.
It is my hope that prior to initiating any legislation or actions that unfairly targets trained, obedient, and docile canine breeds and their responsible caretakers, you will consider the implications of such acts as well as any potential unfavorable ramifications. Please remember that everyone, with the exception of the truly apathetic and unlawful segment who participate in dangerous canine training and irresponsible ownership, desires safety for their families and communities. This type of proposal requires input and discussion from all participants and interested groups with legal representation as well.
I understand this has been a lengthy message, and I want to extend my appreciation for your consideration and attention.

Melissa, it doesn’t help to just say that Stacey is stating misinformation. If you know what is incorrect about her statements can you clarify please. I just heard about this issue today and am horrified that such a law would be put into place whereby an animal is killed just because it is identified as a certain breed and ASSUMED to be guilty of the worst behavior demonstrated by any dog. If this is not the case, explain what I am missing so I (an others) can address the situation accurately. TIA

Truth: On the 5th there is an Animal Control Board meeting to discuss the proposal of no longer allowing certain breeds (Pits, AmStaffs, Chows, Rotties, Presa Canarios and any mix of those breeds) to be adopted out of the shelter. They will simply be killed after their 72 hour hold or immediately if an owner surrender. A large group of us will be there to share our concerns and hopefully put a stop to it before it goes any further.
Even if CCAC decides they want to move forward, it still has to be approved by the County Planning Committee, and after that it will have to be voted into ordinance by the County Commissioners. It is in the EARLIEST STAGES of discussion right now and we are working as an animal loving community to oppose it.
I’ve posted the truth here a few times but the author continues to ignore it and allows this misinformation to stand. I am a Cumberland County resident with two bully breed mixes and I will be at the meeting Monday night. Allowing people to get outraged about things that aren’t true in this article is going to make us look bad when we oppose the proposal. Thank you so much for asking for clarification! ~Melissa

Leslie, I called the shelter myself on Friday, after being told by a reliable source that the info was not true. Melissa is correct, the hearing is tomorrow, Monday, and it is open to the public. I had a Rottie and he was the sweetest dog there ever was. When I got him he had been mistreated and was mean. With a little love and attention we turned him around. My daughter, who was 3 at the time, slept on his back. I had birds at the same time and he would let the birds set on him and he didn’t care. I later had a shephard and he was the same way. It is all in the way they are treated. Small breed dogs can be just as mean as a big dog. People are just stupid about how to treat these bigger dogs. DO NOT show fear and the dog will not bother you. Just because it is a certain breed doesn’t mean that it will be mean.

I have a white german sheperd, almost 3 years old. He is also a seizure alert K9 for my brother. That dog is the sweetest dog you will ever met. Also, as someone posted earlier, German Sheperd’s are used by the police. And for all of the other breeds, it is not their fault, and not all of them are the same. Most big dogs are mistreated. My dog has never been mistreated or neglected, and he is an angel, like i said. Since he is a seizure alert K9, my brother can take him where ever he goes. We have taken him into the mall, Walmart, flea markets, everywhere. People know my dog, and love him, He is a sucker for kids. And he helps with my brothers seizure. My dog, Jay Jay, knows when he is about to have them.
Not to be talking about german sheperds the most, they are just the ones i know about, and the only one of the dogs listed that i have had, or at least can remember having.
Point blank, we should not be killing these dogs just because they are “Bully Breed” Every dog can be agressive, and to me, smaller dogs can be more aggressive than a bigger dog. When someone walks into my house my chihuahua/pug mix barks like crazy, and the german sheperd walks up to their hands for petting and licks them and whatnot. So, no. not every bully breed dog is horrible. Most of them are not. They are aggressive because of their surroundings. And even if they were aggressive to everyone all the time, that doesn’t mean kill them. There are other solutions to fixing an animal, NOT KILLING THEM. That is animal cruelty.

These creatures are not born vicious. Some of the sweetest dogs I’ve had the pleasure of knowing are amongst the breeds being singled out and mislabeled as “bully dogs.” It is not for the ignoramus-at-large being bullies themselves to try to play Hitler and mass murder these beautiful beings based on what general breed they are. Racism against animals? Insanity! Arbitrary cowardice and schizophrenic fear of litigation is not just grounds (as if there ever is) to order death of creatures,and ones that have done no wrong at that. What’s next? Banishing away gravity because it causes things to fall on you sometimes? Demanding that we live in a world free of all hard edges lest we stub our toes? It’s time to start taking some responsibility for a change. I am constantly in amazement of how short sighted and unthinking we have become as a nation. It is no wonder why we are in financial straights without the ability to work our way out of a bad situation from becoming worse. We have become lazy and complacent in our actions and goals. And for some reason beyond my comprehension, we want to label certain breeds as dangerous and to limit their god given right for life. Treat dogs based on their individual personality not their breed. BSL is the same as being pregidous with people. We have worked so hard to break stereotypes. Why would we want to create that with dogs? Treat each dog alone and on it’s own merit. Don’t judge without due consideration. Be a nation of compassion and fairness, not mindlessness and rhetoric.

If you have an old-style fax machine, take a legal size sheet of paper, write your message in black marker, feed it part way through the machine, tape it into a cylendar, and hit the send button!!!!! This is rather shocking to say the least, but honestly killing the breeds is the wrong answer. A dog knows no right or wrong just like a child doesn’t know until the parents teach them otherwise. Yes, it’s true most of these breeds have powerful jaws but look at what they were bred for, most of these dogs are called Working Dogs for a reason. I live overseas in Germany were some of these breeds are banned, but they aren’t ever killed nothing like that.
The German Law puts out a listing of banned breeds but with it they have strict requirements to those few who wish to own the breeds banned. Which is mostly stating that the breed in question be taken to obedience school and pass then they are required to wear a muzzle whenever in public so they are not deemed a public hazard to those around them as well as have current vet records. Oh my gosh, there is a simple answer right there.
I have grown up around dogs my entire life, I’ve even been attacked by one as a kid, and never have I known any dog tea cup sized to giant ever to have some manner of aggression without reason or the work of the owner. Reason a dog might attack is because they have been abused and they don’t trust anyone so their survival instincts take hold just like a humans would. They are defending what they believe is within their territory. Dogs are pack animals everyone ought to know that, so they guard things and heaven help someone or another dog/animal if it comes to claim it. I’ve had dogs that get protective of me because another dog came running at me. I’ve had the pleasure of working with some the breeds mentioned and learned you can teach them. I currently own a two-year-old German Shepherd and as puppies the breed is a handful they don’t know their own strength or the power of their jaws, but I’ve taught mine how to be gentle with me and even my son who she has been gentle with since they both started sharing the floor. My dog knows her mouthing isn’t tolerated at all, she will do nothing but lick my twenty-month-old son. I’ve had every sort of dog from abused to straight from the breeder.
For this to be allowed seriously shows how injustice our country is. Punish the owner first and for most, if a dog bites or attacks then its suppose to be on the owner, and it’s suppose to be then decided if the dog should be put down or removed from the owners care.

I had a GermanShep/golden retriever mix growing up. We rescued him at a shelter. He was less than a yr old. Passed away at 16. BEST DOG EEVVEERR!!!!!!!!!! You are throwing away the chance for a best friend to little kids like Murphy was to me and my brothers. He was there for the first grand baby to be brought home. He just Kaye’s there while babies pulled at his tail. We rescued a chow a few yrs after him. She was thrown out of a truck with her siblings as a puppy.. Literally weeks old.. She was the sweetest cuddle bug ever!!
I don’t see how 72 hours is enough time to determine how a dog is going to react.. Seeing as if that’s the hardest time for an animal in a new place. Those are loving animals you want to just KILL because you are tooooooo lazy to get off your butt and do your actuall job in SAVING lives!!! The point of a shelter is to help find un-wanted fur babies a fur.ever home. Not to throw them in a cage, bring them out thinking they are going free then throw them in a box full of others just to kill them. Would you be able to go one to your kids, and even your furry babies knowing you are killing lives bc you don’t want to help them?!?!
There are rescue groups ALL over willing to take in and help these breeds turn around!! It’s ALL about what dirtbag human raised them to be aggressive!!! You can throw them in a cage and kill them bc they r the ones getting away with the murder!! Catch them and these breeds will live free forever with no problem!!!

To the people who are saying this isn’t accurate information because it’s only a proposal and not in effect: read the top of this page, it says it’s a protest of the proposal. Ideally you should always get the proposal shot down before it becomes law, and this is what it’s trying to do. It says nothing about this being a law.

This absolutely ridiculous. You cannot classify all these breeds together as a whole and call them dangerous. i have a purbred GSD and she is one of the most loving dogs. Before her I had a GS and wolf mix and she was also extremely lovable. the way a dog behaves is based uopn how their owner has raised them. Your kill plan is cruel and is NOT the answer.

Sir, I respectfully ask you to review this matter seriously. I was appalled to learn that as of December 5th you have chosen what you consider the “Bully Breed Ban” to go into effect. How many of you have taken time to educate yourself and if you had, you would realize this is a ludicrous decision made from sheer lack of education. Time after time, you find that it is at bad or neglectful owners that any dogs acts the ways it does. Study after study has proven that breed bans, breed discriminatory legislation, simply don’t work to reduce bites or attacks. Every national humane organization opposes breed specific legislation, of all types, not just bans, because these policies discriminate against dogs, and are ineffective and expensive to enforce. There is not one major animal or health organization including the American Veterinary Medical Association, the National Animal Control Association, and the Centers for Disease Control, among many others, that supports breed discriminatory laws as a way to reduce bites or attacks.
It is also well-established that people cannot look at a dog and determine the breed. More than two dozen breeds have been mistaken for pit bull breeds. Not to mention the hundreds, if not thousands, of mixed breed dogs said to be “pit bulls” based on speculative identifications. And you have chosen to list what you call “Bully Breeds”. Severe injuries or death from dog bites are exceedingly rare, and “pit bulls”, assuming they were correctly identified, are involved in only a fraction of such incidents. It is the owner’s negligent or criminal actions that are responsible for any potential attack, not the dog’s breed or appearance. BSL penalizes responsible dog owners and means the death of dogs that are not in any way dangerous.
Breed bans simply don’t work to keep communities safe. Such legislation is very costly to enforce and negative for a community and state and will only result in creating a climate where dogs are viewed as enemies rather than family members requiring proper care, management and love. I sincerely hope that you will reconsider your decision to end your ban and educate instead of eradicate.

Where is your humanity? Where are your souls? When there are thousands of rescues across the US that would be more than happy to take in these breeds, you’ll waste money on horrendous legislation that could be spent on sending these dogs to those rescues, rather than spending it on their executions. This is nothing more than the wholesale slaughter of innocent animals. You are all criminals. For even considering perpetrating the act of mass execution of animals, you should have to go to jail. When human beings murder mass numbers of other humans, for no reason other than skin color or religion, it’s called genocide and the criminal perpetrators responsible are killed or imprisoned for life, and are forever known as the most despicable humans among us. When you murder thousands of animals based solely on their breed, no one gets as much as a slap on the wrist? In fact, you have the gall to consider it fair? In order to protect people and their pocketbooks from the insurance and lawsuit possibilities? Shame on you. Maybe we should be able to murder your children, or tie your/your wives tubes, just in case those children have the propensity turn into Columbine followers. How about that? This is absolutely insane! I have a pitbul/chow mix that I saved from the pound and she is the sweetest dog I have ever had. I have never even heard her bark! My dad was extremely apprehensive about me getting her since I have a 4 year old little sister but she has never even jumped on her. This just goes to show that it’s nurture not nature. If you raise the dogs with love and respect they will show you no less! Not to mention the amount of labs I have encountered that are prone to biting. It all depends on the dog and owner, not the breed! Get a clue!!

The result of this idiotic legislation is going to end up causing more harm than good. If enacted, once the word gets out of this policy, people will no longer surrender any dogs to animal control in this county. My son and his wife have a pit-bull ,and it was raised with my 2 1/2 yr old grandson, and a pot-bell pig and two cats and another little dog and a baby kitten ……so you can’t tell me that these DOGS are mean, you need to put down the people who made them that way…. this is so sick of you people to do thing like this to dogs who has been miss treated buy there so call owner….

I’ve been bitten by my friends and random peoples chihuahuas and cocker spaniels ore than any other breed.
There is a golden retriever downstairs that will attack ANYONE who goes near their person that he doesn’t know.
On that same note, I know about 5 different people with pitbulls, only one of them has every attacked anything, and it was another animal. It was raised HORRIBLY. The others… amazingly gentle and wonders with kids. I did a stress test on one of their dogs to make sure it wont snap on me or anyone who comes over while he stayed with us… she just rolled over and was a super sweetheart.
I know 3 people with rotties… I’ve never known an aggressive rottie.
Raise your dogs right, and there wont be a problem. Learn your breeds, learn what needs to be done.

I am emailing today with respect to the proposal that is all over the internet. I live in Ontario, Canada where a “pit bull” ban has been in effect for many years; however, we have not euthanized them because of their breed we simply had them fixed.
I currently own a Bullmastiff; he is two years old, 29 inches tall at the withers and 131lbs. He is one of the most friendly dogs I have ever come across in my 31 years and I cannot imagine someone taking him from me and putting him down for anything other than a label, and in this case the only label is the name of his breed, not an individual personality.
Dogs are mirror images of their owners; euthanizing these animals for nothing other than their given breed name is ludicrous, and I will dare to go as far as saying what is even being discussed here is no different than when the Germans incinerated the Jewish community for nothing more than being Jewish.
As a part of the human race, I am not only embarrassed for you but for myself as well.

I’ve owned many different breeds in my 45 years of life, and can honestly state, my 87lb female pit bull is the most well behaved, sweetest, loving and devoted dog EVER!
The people making these ideas into rules have no understanding of dogs and most likely don’t consider themselves animal lovers.
This discrimination is unfair and unjust and needs to be stopped immediately. Discrimination is usually a result of ignorance and lack of education. I suggest these people take a few minutes to educate themselves before committing this act of canine genocide.
I’m appalled and disgusted and can only hope that the humane society of the united states is getting involved to stop this ignorant and horrific act!

All dogs bite and have the capability to start a fight and even kill Bull Dogs holding onto there attacker with there strong jaws. Does that mean that all Ugas that come to the shelter be put down. No cause they were raised a certain way to be loving. All animals will attack and fight if they feel it is necessary. So what is happening is we are being racist against curtain breeds because of there size and what some people train them to do. What are police supposed to do when they can no longer know that the German Shepard is a respected breed. Police taught them to attack. So I guess if you are going to kill those dogs might as well kill all the others. Some Chihuahuas are snappy aggressive dogs but we aren’t killing them. You kill those breeds you have betrayed all the breeds.

You need to take a look outside of statistics…all breeds have good and bad qualities. I have 2 dobermans, have bred quality dobermans for 20 years. Have also worked with German Shephards with KAMAN seeing eye dog foundation…you mean to tell me we trust these GS dogs in our military, police forces, and the blind….but you want to kill them because they are a bully breed? How hipocritical can you be. You need to blame the people who raise these animals no matter what the breed. My pit bull terrier is a sweet heart, and this is just ridiculous. Jail the morons who train dogs to be vicious, and put vicious, dangerous dogs down, but do not label an entire breed to be exterminated. That stinks of nazi-ish ignorance. I cannot believe they are even proposing this. My husband and I had a chow for 13 years and she was the best dog we could have ever asked for, even having brought up 3 children around her from newborns. She is immensely missed from our family and we would take her back in a instant to our family!!! Please choose to give these breeds a chance. They love and arel oyal to their families also!!

Though you are right on this issue, you’ve got to make sending an email easier for people. There are a bunch of email addresses on the blog AND a VERY long email. It needs to be automated to go to ALL the interested parties AND the letter needs to get to the point quicker, because the recipients won’t read it thru. Recommend 1-2 short paragraphs. Dear Mayor Chavonne,
I have just stumbled across information regarding a new proposal that requires all Pit bulls, American Staffordshire Terriers, Rottweilers, Chow Chows, and Presa Canerios to be killed in Cumberland County Animal Control in Fayetteville, NC. I haven’t heard the results yet, but I, along with thousands of others who have been rampaging about this proposal, have high hopes that someone within your committees refused to vote.
Are you a dog owner, Mayor Chavonne? Surely you have owned a dog at some point; you have been comforted by your furry friend, always eager to please you and put a smile on your face.
Surely you must’ve felt the true love that emanates from a dog, as they sit by your side and wag their tail, waiting for your next command. These animals were bred to be our best friends, our companions, and our “other half”. Much like a human cannot choose its race, a dog cannot choose its breed. Humans cross-bred to create the exact species that the CCAC proposes to eliminate from its shelter. Rottweilers and Presa Canerios would not exist without the hand of man; therefore, we must accept that we created these animals and it is simply unconstitutional to punish them for our mistakes.
These animals don’t have voices; they don’t have the ability to speak up for themselves and plead for exoneration. Like humans, these animals make mistakes. An entire breed, or in this case, several breeds, cannot be held accountable for certain attacks carried out by say, one pit bull. This would be similar to deeming humans a murderous and violent species because of certain flawed individuals that commit violent crimes. The behaviors of these animals can often directly correlate to the owners of the dogs; it is possible that the person whom adopted the guilty pit bull was ignorant and didn’t oblige by the general guidelines of owning an animal such as that.
Mayor Chavonne, I strongly encourage you to visit the Cumberland County Animal Control and observe the euthanization of one of these innocent, voiceless creatures. When that animal goes limp, and is whisked away as if a life wasn’t just wrongfully taken, ask yourself, could you hold the needle? Could you euthanize a Chow Chow? I am not asking you this to be gruesome or persuasive; I am simply trying to shed some reality on the details of this proposal. If you had a dog, and you loved that canine with all of your heart, could you murder it? Would your answer change if that dog was an American Staffordshire Terrier? I think I can answer this for you, and I confidently answer no. Regardless of the breed of your dog, labeled a “Bully Dog” or not, your love for that dog doesn’t change; that dog has still been a wonderful companion and has done nothing to prove that it is violent or deserves death.
I have never stepped foot into Fayetteville, and at this point in time, it does not seem like a wonderful and justified place that I would ever like to visit. I am from Massachusetts, where we pride ourselves on no-kill shelters and foster the NEADS National Campus, where dogs of all ages and backgrounds are trained to be helpful to the disabled.
Please, Mr. Chavonne, consider what I have written to you today. As an avid animal lover, I could’ve written you thousands of pages about the cruel intentions of this proposal, but I have respectfully refrained because I believe that you will be enlightened from the emails, letters, and phone calls that you receive from concerned individuals much like me.
These animals are so helpless, and rely on us to protect and care for them the best that we can. By euthanizing a dog of the particular breeds outlined in the proposal, the shelter is committing murder in the eyes of many, many moral individuals across the globe. These are innocent and fragile lives, much like those of our children. These animals do not deserve to be held accountable for violence carried out by another “Bully Dog” in another state. Like people, these dogs are individuals too. Each one has a personality different than its brother or sister; one may be lazy while the other may be playful, just as one may be aggressive and another passive.
We cannot generalize each breed of dog; every dog within that breed is different; from the spots on their coat to their loyalty to their owner. Please remember that, Mayor Chavonne.

They were lovers because that is how I trained them. I did not train them to be mean. Anyone who came in contact with them fell in love with them and changed their opinion about Rotties. I am a major animal lover especially when it comes to dogs. I have had a wonderful life involving German shepards and various other breeds. My German Shepard was named Sam and he was the best dog and friend I could ever have asked for. I grew up with that dog and loved him dearly. It absolutely does not matter what type of breed a dog is but whether they’re properly trained. Has it ever occurred to you that the animal could have been abused or hurt in its lifetime? All dogs even the ones listed above DESERVE a loving home and a second chance. Robbing them of their life is SICK!!! God did not put these wonderful pets on this earth to be awaiting their deathbed. Every dog DESERVES to live their lives to the fullest!!! As an animal lover I will continue adopting all breeds and I hope that you too will open your hearts to the wonders and love these breeds can provide to you. OMG are your serious about this. This is just totally pathetic. I have owned German Shepherds all my life. I have had at least 8 GERMAN SHEPHERDS – all of which were pure bred. I have never once had a problem with any of them being aggressive or dangerous. I have taken all of them to public places and around other dogs and never once had a problem. If there is a problem with a breed of dog it is because of its owner and not because of the breed of dog. I have seen more vicious poodles, Taco bell dogs, pomeranians than I have of the said breeds in this article. My husband was in the military for many years and then came home and went to work for the Post Office and he had every dog every day waiting for him to get there, he loved them, they knew it and it made no difference to Bob if they were the size of a pony. It is how you treat them. They each got there favorite treat every day after he got through asking there owners permission.You have to put yourself in there shoes so to speak, if you got outside your (yard), your country , wouldn’t you be scared? They take on a different personality because they are more afraid of you than you are of them. I lived in Fayetteville, NC for 3 years (on the back side) and while living there I had several dogs come in my yard and chase us back inside. One even came to the back door and was aggressively trying to get in at my male dog. Funny thing to this is, none were of the “bully breeds!!!!” This makes NC look ignorant. Instead, they should have a leash law or go after the owners!! I had min pin that was more aggressive then the ‘bully breed’ that lived behind us.
I cannot believe what the world is coming to. This is so sickening!! Maybe they should put the focus on more important issues!

I have owned or played second parent to every dog on this list with the exception of Akitas. And it is my personal experience every one of those dogs are big lap dogs, goof balls that love to play, and are easily trained when given the proper care and attention. What dog violence comes down to is owner responsibility. A dog’s owner knows the dog’s temperment, and should also be aware of leash laws. A good dog owner knows the neccessary precautions to take to avoid typically completely avoidable incidents. What most dog issues come down to is negligent or abusive owners. Hold the irresposible people responsible for their actions, or lack thereof, not innocent dogs who are only doing what they have been taught, or not taught not, to do. This is unfair and inhumane. If a puppy of one of these breeds came to a shelter, it would not be given a chance for life. If a dog of these breeds came to a shelter and was the sweetest, most congenial dog there, it would not be given a chance for life. This reminds me of America before integration, and of Hitler with his slaughter of anyone who did not fit his ideal of the perfect race. Surely our legislators and city/county/state officials are much more evolved and civil than those past horrors and the hate-filled heartless people who caused them?

This is not the first state to ban breeds of dogs although it is the first state to ban so many breeds of dogs. What happens to the owners of the dogs banned? They get countless years of hearbreak and not to mention they start to resent their government. The dogs? Well they are innocent animals to be slaughtered. I personally find that to be animal cruelty and correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure it is illegal. Way to go NC government, setting a good example-not. Someday I hope that people will understand it is not the breed of dog that is bad, it is how the animal is raised and trained. Take action against the individual malicious ones (like we do with the malicious people) and not all the dogs who are not malicious.

My neighbor just got two rescue dogs, a German Shepherd and a Shepherd-Huskie mix. He has to get the mixed breed certified as safe to own – a mix of two “dangerous” breeds. The Shepherd is excluded because she was a seeing-eye dog. But I’ll tell you, in my opinion she’s the one who’s dangerous. Not two days after getting her new home she used talents gained from her former profession to jimmy the lock on their fenced in property and go for a walk down the street – she even took the Husky-Shepherd. Now neither of them got into trouble but if she can do stuff like that what’s next? Robbing banks?

It always works this way. The problem is people but, we can’t put people to sleep (too bad huh?) so we kill one of the victims – the animal. How many of our states even have comprehensive laws governing the pet “trade” and ownership? Any 3rd rate moron can own venomous snakes, non-native species like Pythons, chimpanzees, asian rats – virtually any animal and then breed these animals in places like their livivng rooms. I don’t get the stupidity but then we are talking about our state and federal legislature’s inability to wipe their own asses. People should have to prove they can manage a pet and be licensed for it. Put a price on ownership, ban non-native and venomous species, ban all breeding except by licensed professionals with real breeding facilities. If I had my way I’d close every pet shop on the planet.

Killing animals because of their breed is despicable and what kind of message are you sending. I work for Hernando County Animal Shelter in Florida and we try every way we can to adopt out animals to loving homes. Of course there are times when animals have to be euthanised (sick, very aggressive, etc.) but to “murder” a dog because of its breed is wrong. Have you never heard of rescues and animal foster homes. Many of these breeds are loving dogs who make great pets, plus keep in mind these breeds that you want to destroy have saved many lives of our military personnel ( trained to sniff out bombs) protected police officers, and used as cadaver dogs for 9-11. Please reconsider in what you are doing and investigate other options.

I couldn’t disagree more with the proposal for this ban. Why punish a dog for simply doing what he/she was TAUGHT to do. These dogs are not like this naturally. It has nothing to do with being a characteristic of the breed. It has everything to do with the people who own these dogs and the way they treat them. I’m the proud owner of a Rottweiler, a German shepard/Pitbull mix, and TWO pitbulls. I’m young, 23, so my boyfriend and I have big parties at our house with sometimes up to 50 strangers. Our dogs are out and running free the whole time and couldn’t be happier just to be around people. I’m also a nanny full time of a 15 month old, 4yrs, and 8yr old. They BEG me to take them to my house bc they love my dogs, and my dogs love them. It is about how the animal is treated that affects how the animal acts. And for those who believe a dog that was once treated badly and had it affect their personality or demeanor is and always will be a “bad” or “dangerous” dog, that is far from the truth also. My first Pitbull came from an aweful background. She was taken by animal control from her home in Brooklyn where she was abused and neglected. Weighing only 29 pounds at a year and a half. She is now 4 and weighs a meaty 65 pounds. It’s obvious she was beaten because she’s terrified of anything that resembles a stick (the broom, my mothers kane). She also had other behavioral problems when I got her. She had nervous aggression with strangers, which means she would sometimes snap out of fear when meeting a new person. Shes never attacked, just snapped at them once. She’s gotten probably around 10 people. But that’s what socialization and rehabilitation are for. I took her everywhere and anywhere she could meet and be around strangers (with the safety of a muzzle) and within the first 6 months of having her she got over that fear and is now happy and tail wagging when she sees people. I believe every dog should be given a chance at life no matter what behavior problems they may have. I hope my story can show some people that.

Except for dogs made bad by owners or amateur breeders there are no bad dogs. Been around them all my life and seen all kinds.

Faced with a 100-strong crowd who condemned the demonizing of certain dog breeds, the Cumberland County Animal Control Board backed away Monday night from a move to limit adoptions of some breeds from the county shelter.
Instead, the board directed Dr. John Lauby, the animal control director, to look into ways the county can more carefully vet the people who adopt animals from the shelter to ensure they’ll be responsible owners.
“We’re not trying to kill anything,” Lauby said. “We’re trying to adopt animals.”

As an owner of a spca rottweiler who I raised for 10 beautiful years, she past on from cancer. I lost a daughter that day. Now I am a owner of a pitbull frm a rescue and she is certified trained and lovable, licks you all the time and my sons best friend. I also rescued a pointer. And the girls are best friends, they play, sleep together and inseperable. I wish I could rescue all and peoples ignorance on dogs sadens my heart. People make bad breeds, not the animal! I will continue to hope that one day people will wake up.

If you allow this to happen how will the cycle of life continue. Will next be bears because mawed a human or even a cat because it bites you when its picked up. Then you will start see things different as which human race should be eliminated. However, t his might seem as a good idea to end the breeds of certain dogs but will lead to plague that carry on giving an idea to make the world a better place by eliminating race then the country of most threat that will leave the world empty and what happens when a place abandoned?……It ROTS. I know I might have taken this alittle over board but when something is started usually it is carried on or repeated in time in the same way or differently and your the ones that have to stand under judgment for your sins to answer the question why you took a life from a dog a creation of the creator of mankind. What’s going to happen when everything goes blistic people starving due war and chemical poison in the air that affects the plants water its going man vs. Man world you wish you had smart strong dog to protect you while your asleep not a poodle that will run and hide behind a chair.

I prefer adopting over buying a dog, I have adopted 4 wonderful dogs in the past 10 years and the only one I had a problem with was “Freckles” a Cocker Spaniel. With great sadness I had to put him down for attacking everyone but me. I have also adopted a German Sheperd & a St. Bernard, they have been the best family members ever and would never hurt anyone unless we were being threatened! Just because a dog is a large breed does not mean they will not make a perfect family member for someone! Anyone who would kill a dog just because of it’s breed and/or size should be put down for being an uncaring ass!!!!!

All my dogs have been pittbull mix, or rottwieler. They have all come from the shelter. They have all been success stories. I don’t understand how they will kill dogs without giving them a chance.

I do not live in said area of Cumberland County but I ran across this article and was totally outraged by what I was reading. To kill the animals would be inhumane unless in the case of attack and/or death. These dogs are doing what they have been taught by their owners to have a mean tendency. Otherwise they are submissive and sweet!
I have owned both rotties and pitbulls. I have also been around the other dogs mentioned in the article. Not once have I ever seen these dogs get mean unless provoked by an outside source.
TO BAN these dog breeds would be telling alot of people that they are no longer allowed to love,protect, and raise their children. I am an animal lover and I find this article to be shameful and hurtful to those who love their animal children and being told they can no longer have possession of their animal children.

This is a total discrace To Kill Numerous Breeds! When are you people going to get educated and realize it’s the deed not the Breed. We have a program in the Town of Brookhaven on Long Island, where 20 Pittbull and Pitbull Mix went thru a 6 week training course operated by professional trainers and a host of volunteers. The program was a complete succcess where 18 of the 20 dogs were adopted out. to loving families. This whole thing regarding liability is a farce and a poor excuse to kill a living animal because Cumberland County deems them dangerous because of their breed. Who ever introduced this legislation is a complete IDIOT!!!!

This is the stupidest thing i’ve ever heard.. what is wrong with you people. dogs are just like people but you dont kill all the people who kill other people do you, no you put them in prison with the chance of getting out, but when these dogs are forced to fight or do bad things because of there stupid owners you want to kill them. I dont know why these people think these breeds are bad. I have been around Huskys for the last 22 years as my family has bred and raised them. They are the biggest family dogs I have ever known. I currently own a german shepard husky mix that is a katrina rescure. He is the biggest baby in the world. I have friends that breed and show rotties with no problems. And have more friends that have pits that are registerd therapy dogs. The one breed that I have had more problems with in my life is a cocker. But no dog or breed of dog is bad its the people and the situation that the animal is in that changes the animal.

AS an animal rescuer I will tell you up front not all of these breeds are mean. My neighbors and nephew that lives behind the neighbor both have pit bulls. they are the sweetest dogs I have been around. A chiuahua is more likely to bite a person than some of these other dog breeds I know because my chiuahuahs are meaner than a rattle snake. I am actually looking for a doberman to keep inside the house with me and my teenage children. Due to the economy that this wonderful government (like the people wanting this band) has put us under, People need protection. These dogs are very loyal breeds, and police even use many of them for police dogs. These dogs know their jobs, and do their jobs to the fullest. Thumbs up to the responsible owners of these dog. Just like humans we have the good and the bad. You wont let us to just kill all the animal cruelty thugs or drug dealers or thiefs why would you want to kill a dog that can protect a family. When the alarm companies call my phone to try and sell alarms to me I tell them no thanks I dont need it. I have two large dogs and a 45-70 that will protect me and mine. If we are not home to use these go for it if the dogs cant handle you then you must need it worse than me. Oh and as my grampa used to say a locked door only keeps an honest man OUT!!!!!!!

Dogs are not bad just because of the breed they are.
I have a breed of dog call ISSR Shiloh Shepherd. You could look at them and say they are German Shepherds or you could look at them and say they are part wolf, and nothing would be further from the truth. They are neither! If one of my dogs were lost in your county you would put them down too!
This is Breed discrimination and pure ignorance!

We have been the loving family of Rotties for years, currently Bernie, male, and Emma, female. They are in my humble opinion the most human like breed we have experienced.The love and gentleness these dogs express is beyond most humans.They always make us see how smart and giving any living creature can be. They play with a dear friends Pit Bull regularly, and could not imagine life without them. At a local dog park, they have playfully backed away from small, fuzzy, slipper type dogs, who seem to be a bit aggressive. Long Live The Breed!

I have to say. I have tWO german shepards that we adopted from the human society. One a female we have had for 10yrs now and the other a male we just got 3mos ago he is 18mos old. They are the sweets dogs I have ever owned in my life.
My 10yr old was playing in my neighbors yard by himself catching lighting bugs not in the dogs space. (the adults were at a picnic table) and my neighbors small breed dog attached my son. The dog broke the chain he was on and ran across the yard and grabbed my son by the arm and took him down then went for his neck! So does this mean that all small breed dogs need to be banned of course not!
With this said we as dog owners need to use common sense!!! And I believe all dogs need to BE given a chance. The human society told me when I got my 10yrs felmale shepard that she was not good with kids and other animals. WELL COULD THEY OF NOT BEEN MORE WRONG!!!! SHE IS THE SWEETEST, MOST GENTLE DOG!!! SHE LOVES ALL ANIMALS AND EVEN TOOK UP WITH OUR NEIGHBORS CAT THEY PLAY IN THE YARD TOGETHER ALL THE TIME. HER AND MY SON OUR BEST FRIENDS AND SHE LOVES HIM DEARLY. THEY PLAY, TAKE NAPS , EAT LUNCH TOGETHER AND WHEN HE IS AT SCHOOL SHE WAITS BY THE DOOR FOR HIM TO GET HOME!!!!

I have been raising Pit Buls for 43 years and has never had a mean dog to bite someone. Dogs learn the commands of the owners. You need to start worrying about people murdering, alcohol, drugs, etc. that is destroying America. Your priorties are in the wrong place. The American government is screwed up anyway, send people back to other countries and stop letting them live here free on taxes I paid in. Dogs is the least you should worry about, lock those bastards up that make money fighting them,etc.
